They don't. When Jefferson wrote those words he didn't do so with recreational drug use in mind. In my mind, this quote is almost as absurd as Reagan's. Guranteed US historians across the nation get a chuckle out of this.

I was listening to NPR and they had an interview with Commander Cody where he relayed a story from Louis Armstrong. Now, anyone worth their salt knows Louis was a major pothead (or gage, as he called it) but even I was surprised to hear about this.
Louis was on a returning flight from one of his journeys across Africa. All the chiefs and officials he visited gave him samples of their indigenous herbs and he had a trumpet case full of cannabis. He knew that it would probably be confiscated in the states, but he brought it with him just in case.
Upon landing he noticed that President Nixon was in the building along with his entourage. Nixon is up near the gate taking his time for a photo opportunity and he spies Louis. They have a smile and shake session for the cameras and Louis asks Nixon to carry his trumpet case through customs. Who knew Nixon was a drug smuggler?

I find nearly every sentence uttered by the late great Terence McKenna to be simultaneously full of new ideas, thought provoking, and utterly ridiculous. Listening to him has been one of my favorite mind-stretching exercises lately. If you don't laugh at Terence McKenna, you're probably either not listening, confused, or still wondering what that word means that he just used...

I understand it to mean you have the right to live, to be free, and to do whatever
the fuck you want to, as long as it harms no other person.
