H3ad goes Coco

Gratefulhad whats your thoughts on adding coarse builders sand to coco, i know u keep yours staright, ive read elsewere of coco plus perlie (chow mix) outperforming straight coco but i realize perlite holds water also whereas sand hold nothing but increase the downward piston motion of water, i have my own opinons on coco and feel by itself it need work, u ever used any sand? ill def be adding perlite to my next batch and if the sands cheap some of that also.

this method produces some very frosty and smelly nuggets, though have yet to see a yield even slightly comparable to what I've done in ebb n Flow.

I threw with this method due to the fact that the plants do not produce enough weight. I'm switching to canna coco a+b and hope to see an increase in yield and flavor.

That's odd cuz it's giving me my best look plants and yields yet! I'm about to pull over 2oz per plant in 3 Liter Air Pots of Ready Gro Moisture Formula watered 2x a day with 10-15% run off. That's under a 400w HPS too! I saw a guy happy he was getting 2oz in 5gal buckets under 2 1000w HPS!! I know my yield is the Air Pots too but even in my CFL grows when I switched to this nutrient mix I saw better growth and more swollen calyxes which I am seeing this time under HID cuz I'm not using PBP this time :tiphat:

New to coco, is this a deficiency?

New to coco, is this a deficiency?

Check it out guys, i notticed a little yellowing in the leaves on a few plants before i transplanted, my guess is that it is heat stress from a couple days of being a little too close to the 1000, i have since raised the lights and they are more spread out now, but just want to make sure it isnt something else! feeding 6/9 Rez ph 5.5 runoff is 760 ppm (1.5 EC)
Also Ive been running co2 in the sealed room with RH 60% and temps about 80-85, i dropped the temps to 76 anyone want to chime in?

Yeh I get this same shit.

My only suggestion is pull it outta the bucket, and look at the roots.

If the roots are little stubby things that look like they keep forming new tips...you overwatered. Let it dry out until bone dry but not droopy between waterings.

If the roots are completely white and full / growing back and forth ball-style then its not overwatering its possibly mag lockout from too much cal.

first off I didnt give anyone neg rep

second to clarify I am speaking in terms of comparison to using GH in an ebb n flow w/hydroton vs handwatered coco.
I too get 2 oz plants but with 9 plants per 1k thats mediocre yeild.
trying to use low plant count so i need that to be more like 3.5 oz per plant~ or increase plant count which I don't especially want to do.

H3ad...do you mind sharing what size those are when you put them into flower? At the end of flower? Any pruning tips?

I figure I can take a tray, set it down kinda low and go hand fed dtw with 32 plants under 2 1000s. I really like the taste of plants that don't have to be fed so hard...and at 2 lbs per light there ain't no reason at all not to do it right.

Would just like to note a few things since switching from DWC to coco.. the good moves and teh bad ones.

Started watering daily using 5050 tap RO with around a 5.8 ph. Gave good yields with about a 3 week veg got over 2.3 ounce minimum with every plant.. in 2.5 liter white botanicare i believe pots.

Next run, coco mixed with cococrutons.. same watering daily.. growth was ok but not as fast as without crutons and seemed like it was being over watered.. bottom of the pots were soggy. Did about a 2 week veg and got over 2 ounces on most plants but had alot more issues with this run.

Current run.. this is where I think I have it dialed in.. . everything is way greener and i'm finally seeing that DWC like explosive growth. Running 3 gallon smart pots with the coco cut 55/45% with chunky perlite. Thing's i've noticed with this one is I gotta keep the ph higher and supplement mag. Growth is definitely wayyy faster than any of the previous runs.. being able to totally air out while being watered daily is working great.

I did a little test with some plants in veg, watering one daily and one when its light. The one being watered daily is killing the other one in terms of growth. I could see if you were using straight coco in pots that were too big maybe letting them dry out between waterings would be good, but running them with perlite and smart pots watering daily they love it.

Hope this helps (fyi this is under 2 600's)

another thing I forgot to add, root excelurator is the shit.. the only additive i use because it WORKS

Those plants go in at about 18" tall and nearly that big across, LSTd, 3 plants by 6 plants with the 1K walking about 4 ft on a mover. Plant footprint is about 6ftx12ft. Plants get rotated so that every plant sits in the center row for a couple of days each week and the plants on the outside rows get 180'd every day.

The 2oz/per is with plants like ChemD, C99 and G33... I get slightly less with SourD, Trainwreck and kushes and the like, maybe 1.5...

Thanks. I really like the idea of moving the plants around like that. I don't care how good the reflector is I see big fall offs from directly under the light to the edges of the grow.

You are lucky to have space to bush them out that much in veg. Mine tend to get jammed too close together and then they grow up but not out so much.

Thanks again for all of the great advise in this thread.

Peat

Yep.
I have the same problem, Sam.

We just need a larger veg...

And better math!

(I gotta figger how to make 3 x 6 = 16!) :chin: :dunno:

With 16 plants under 1K I usually get around 2oz per.

3 plants by 6 plants

LOL ;)

============================================
So far, ...

(50% tap / 50% RO)
No mg supp req
Straight tap is a bit too chunky

=================
Botanicare Cocogro
Unadulterated & Unrinsed. :yoinks:
(Simply "hydrated" as directed on label)

(Only 3 bales. So far, so good) :yes:

(Going on third re-use...no treatments...) :yoinks:

(few gnats) (sprinkled w/ crushed Mosquitto Dunks...)
(We'll see...) :drum:

(A few days ago, had some springtails (?) in the runoff... But, not anymore (?)...)
(We'll see...) :drum:

======================
seedlings are sprouted in well drained 3 oz cups of coco
They go under 430W immediately upon surfacing. :yoinks:
They get 3/4.5 within a day, or two. :yoinks:
Sometimes skipping a 1/2 day (or so), to dry just a little, to promote root growth.
3 - 6 days later = 6/9 :yoinks:

Clones are rooted in coco & peat pellets.
After a few roots show, they are transplanted with 3/4.5
Clones get well rooted under flos with 3/4.5
Within 5-7 days (longer, if needed) transfer to veg area & switch to 6/9

===================
6/9 up until the "stretch" has ended / buds begin to fill out
(seems to = around 3 to 4 wks 12/12 on most 10 wk varieties)
Then drop Micro
Then 50% tap / 50% RO the last 7 - 14 days

===================
Handwatering in Veg
"beer cups" to 1 gal pots
12" - 18" ... depending...

===================
Dripping in Flower
Two 1 gph drippers per 3 gal pot
Manually turning on the pump.
Until the first few start to drip.
Let 'em soak a bit.
Drip until the last few start to drip...

Don't count the two sativas in the corner...

;)

Actually my count does vary depending on bush size... sometimes it is 14 or 15 sometimes 18... 16 2 oz plants is kind of an average figure... Also, if the room get's too bushy I'll pull a couple out and put into the other room where harvest is a rotating one.

What size pots is this in? My friend who is in RW thinks anything I say about coco is bullshit now cuz they douche bag at the hydro shop said even in Air Pots with Coco he was only getting 1.5lbs tops per 1k and I'm like BULLSHIT!!! How can I pull damn near 12oz under a 400w HPS in 3liter Air Pots of coco then? How is it Head gets 2lbs a light pretty much? I think if you were Air Pots Head you get even more than what you do now cuz I'm getting 2oz per plant under a 400 and can fit 6-9 plants comfy and that's with 3liter Air Pots I could just imagine what I could pull in 3gal Air Pots under a few 600s!!!

yea my buddy grew PK plants twice the size he had before and vegged them for the same amount of time! Had to remove quite a few plants and got a bigger yield than he ever had before and even went down a size from 3gal regular pots to 2gal Air Pots. Check out the size of this SR71 PK which is known to veg slow and not stretch much ect..

For PK those are some big ass plants with a 2 week veg from clone :tiphat: and like I said those are in 2gal pots!!! He had over a 100g on each of those
