Jars Leaking Odour?

My jars are leaking odour!

I bought them from ikea so they were cheap & they dont officially say 'airtight' anywhere in the description, but they have rubber seals like proper coffee jars, if i sniff around the seal i can smell a skunky smell for sure... i grew blue cheese so it is extra stinky, but surely the smell shouldn't leak around the seal at all?

Is this a common thing?
Ive just bought loads of jars that claim to be airtight
But if this is a common problem, i can't keep my jars in my tent forever, am i gonna have to buy tupperware containers to put the jars in!?

the best is les parfait jars because they are the most precisely machined....if the glass rim or lid is only a mm out then the seal is liable to leak smell and let moisture in....

i recently tested 10 big big jars for seed storage, 3 were les parfait...i got them to 30% humidity then put them in the fridge....only 4 stayed at the humidity i put them in at, the 3 les parfait ones and only 1 other brand...so i would hypothesise that many of them are essentially shite...

I bought some new jars that at least claim to be airtight, i think the seals on these ikea ones are just crap, the seals on the new ones i bought look like le parfait seals, brown rubber rings, not this cheap transparent chinese shite on the ikea jars

I took a jar with me into work and it STINKS!!!
No way could i cure these jars outside my tent lol, it seriously wreaks
Dont get me wrong i love the smell, but i don't wanna attract too much attention

I have found that the flip-top ones with the glass lids, rubber seals and wire latch do not seal well at all, and can see smells leaking. I recommend "Bernardin" brand mason jars with the 2 piece screw-on lids, 500ml, 12 per case for 4 bucks or so...

They seal 100% every time. easy way to tell if your jar seals - put water in empty jar, latch the top and invert. If it leaks it is not airtight... :rasta:

I got this jar yesterday from a smokeshop made by Phire.....it's etched glass seal. I love it, the lid slides almost hydraulic-like into the top and I can't smell anything and believe they are airtight. I think I saw in HT they won an award for best cure jars.....only problem is cost....the one I have will hold an 1/8 of weed and it was $35. I love it, but damn. I bought mine as a dry-sift jar, so the size isn't an issue.

almost every jar i've ever had stunk to some degree, some a lot, some just a little, but all some.
But, I have this 2 gallon bucket (used to have protien powder in it) with a big, thick, rubber band built into the lid, and the lid snaps on pretty hard, that you can literally cram full and it will not stink at all, not one bit, the perfect transport bucket, and I also put jars into it as well sometimes.

Ball jars do well for me. Hell they're used for canning, preserving foods and such.
Plus you'd be supporting a local company if yer home's in the same land as mine:D

You can seal it in a Mason Jar with a Foodsaver vacuum attachment for $10

im prety sure that mason jars arent really desingned to seal perfectly but once and thats only if the contents are hot as to remove pressure? think about it they seal jam perfectly airtight for months but the jam was scaulding when it was put in, and when you open it for the first time it makes that typical POP...im probably high

Bags permeate much easier than glass jars, this is obvious - you can smell as little as a stinky gram thru a bag. I have had cases of full jars, and not so much as a whiff.

I mentioned water test 'cuz I noticed many yrs back that my fliptops were leaking when I mixed some iso in one. I shook it and it instantly leaked all over my hands with the lid latched down. Those jars were donated to the landfill shortly thereafter!

I guarantee these will do the job, it has been well proven in this house... (Agree w/ above - avoid handling outside of jar with resinny hands - this will deposit odours on the outside)

Yah, they are empty ATM, but we're working on it. ETA 5-6 wks... :rasta:

That ain't what I am talking about.

Foodsaver vacuum sealer machines have an attachment that will seal Widemouth or regular Mason Jars.

This allows you to vaccum out the air in the jar and it seals the lid air tight. It is hard to get the lid off. It goes POP! when the air goes back in the jar.

So put the weed in the Mason Jar, put on metal jar lid, suck out the air, screw on the ring, you are set to go.

Jar lids can be reused over and over again.

There is no heat involved, no water baths of boiling water at all.

Just an air hose to suck out the air from inside the jar, making an airtight seal.

It is called the FoodSaver Vacuum Sealer Attachment for Mason Jars.

As long as you don't dent the edge of the metal lid when opening, you can reuse over and over and over.

This solves all the problems listed above, since air can't get out, no smell.

Mason, ball, and kerr jars all seal just fine, I grew up eating food out of the same ones year after year, ya gotta change a seal now and then.

best jars are the mason/ball type ones with a 2 Part lid. this way, you have pressurized even rubber seal all around the diameter of jar. that being said, some stinky stink will still peak through a tad. part of the reason is that theres often material stuck in the lid components & jar top grooves. these get crushed upon every spin & smell. so, try to keep the top area/lid clean. the roor glass on glass jars are what i use. small, med, lg.....what could be better??

i wasnt speaking against your claim of the foodsaver, i hadnt even seen your post by the time i typed that just stating my opinion of mason jars. Its all i use, and i may consider the foodsaver sealer. I defenitly agree be gentle with your lids because the dents make a jar useless, also you can buy packs of just the lids to replace the dented ones once you have enough, god knows we all do.

not gonna read through the whole thread, but mason jars are what you want/need hands down.

no wi dont know about the jars that you got from ikea, but if they are anything like those candle type jars with that type of seal, i know a guy that out a strip of black electricians tape around the seal of the jar and it didint leak anything after that.

funny how that worked though, but it did.
