I saw a new story called, "The Man In The Suitcase". A women was suspected of cutting up her husbands body, wrapping it in plastic bags, stuffing the body parts in suitcases, and dumping them into Chesapeake Bay.

What happened is that they tracked the women's internet use and found a search for some drug that was used to poison the guy. Her defense to that was that it was her husbands traffic, since because he was an internet gambler and the previous link 20 seconds before was for a gambling site.

None the less. She was convicted.....

Yeah, this is nothing new, just that all the ISPs in the US have come under compliance. Chances are that your ISP has long since been under compliance anyway, so in the majority of cases nothing new has happened.

You can bypass an internet wiretap effectively by using an encrypted proxy service such as findnot.com

They also allow payment via international money order.

however findnot.com is the most professional service I've seen but more complicated than the web based ones such as anonymouse or guardster

These services also make you virtually immune to spyware and most viruses, so that's an added benefit and a good reason to want one anyway.

Also avoid sites that make you download their applets or more or less require you to click YES or OK somewhere to install their software, which could be anything from a useful applet to a IP tool that reports your local IP right through the encrypted proxy.

I think in most cases the free anonymouse (non encrypted) proxies are good enough. However, if I was posting a lot of information and pictures something like findnot would be well worth the money as I feel they are on the level.

The easiest is of course taping the neighbors wireless access points when doing sensitive surfing. Unsecured access points can be found on almost every corner in any major city simply by scanning for them with a decent wireless card. I do this when I'm lost somewhere. Stop and get an address and then jump on an unsecured access point and get directions and leave. If you had sensitive uploads to make you might be better off using that than going right through your ISP since technically they can see them (and anything else you post that's not encrypted). However you are just one of thousands or more of their customers generating and endless super stream of data that no monitoring system on the planet could ever hope to store, no less fully analyze. With that in mind torpak or a web based anonymous proxy makes you reasonable secure.

The most likely point that the MAN might get your IP from is by wiretapping the servers hosting service or ISP that hosts the illegal or questionable content that you wish to read. So in this case they would wiretap at the servers ISP level. So the server admins themselves would likely not know about it since it happens at their ISP. Once they plant that at the servers ISP level they can track ALL IP's that connect to the server.

If you have a proxy then they just get your proxies IP, not yours and that more or less gives them nothing. If they wanted however and IF the company would cooperate the proxy company might actually give up the logs which would show it was your IP that connected at that exact time and sent that number of bytes in packets. Most companies will work under the good faith policy where they do not guarantee the privacy of your log information. So law enforcement does not need a warrant in those 'good faith' situations since the companies willingly cooperate. It's is up to the consumer to ensure they do not buy or use services that provide law enforcement with good faith access to user information which would otherwise require a warrant.

So, the next level up is a high end proxy service that destroys their logs and is well out of the jurisdiction of the over zealous super agencies. That is, by the time they actually realized they needed log X it would be auto-deleted as policy via the secure proxy provider. For this level service I'd recommend findnot as everything else is just a toy in comparison. But, like I said most people are fine just with the free anonymous proxies, though you never know when the CIA might have made a controlling purchase in one... it happens. That's where the orginal safeweb went. It was a CIA intel tool against china among other things. Supposedly funded after the fact by the CIA, but who knows exactly when they took over the project.

Well, what if you didn't incriminate yourself, and they still spied on you? What if they made a mistake or got something wrong, or what if they loosen up those regulations to allow them to spy on almost anyone for trivial reasons? what if the definition of 'incriminate' on the internet changes. right now, just because you might post pictures of cannabis, visit certain cannabis sites, etc does not make you a grower, nor is it illegal to do. for all they know those pictures are old or taken from thousands of miles away. for all they know, they could be someone else's photo's. but then imagine a change where even posting photos or viewing such sites are reason enough to tap you. they can't arrest you because they have nothing on you yet, but by being allowed to tap you, could allow them to get enough evidence to get a search warrant for your home. what if they tap all of the people that go to aljazeera sites, and then they find incriminating information they would have never been able to find out about otherwise. Like all systems, this one has the potential to be abused. what if a disgruntled ex boyfriend decides he wants to play the role of stalker? I'm sure worse things than that could happen though. You do realize it doesn't take much to become a law enforcement employee, or even a government employee?

this goes deeper than growers for sure, I doubt this is the top of their list of uses for tapping the internet. I really don't see why it is necessary though, since the ISP's can already monitor and record traffic from their own people, so all they would need to do is make copies for the law enforcement..Except now law enforcement doesn't necessarily need warrants to get a hold of this data. the whole point of a warrant is to already have good reason(and explain it) to believe something illegal is going on.

I would have thought that the powers that be would require a good reason to procure a warrant for an individual.
As for gettin busted it's usually grasses that do the dirty work or helicopters with thermo imaging eqpt on board.
