higher temps after switching from CMH to HPS, but lower temps than previous run under CMH only (in summer, and zero hermies)

is it allrigth for you now ?

No one is attacking you Marcel, we appreciate your participation in the discussion. You must realize though this is news to many here, and anytime you introduce a premise it will need to withstand scrutiny- if it's sound you don't need to be defensive you need to be patient.

i've got a question...hopefully someone has done this, and can give an experienced reply.
obviously cmh only goes to 400w
i've been considering a hood like the growzilla where you can put
2 bulbs in the same hood.
sooooo would that make like 800w each hood coming down onto the plants?
and if so, would that give us the intensity that all of us have been asking for this whole thread about a 600w or 1000w bulb.
400w is nice but i dont get the size yields i was hoping for.
800w i'm sure would damn near do it, if i'm figuring this right.
800w cmh = bigger and better plants, and still without the heat issues of a 1000w bulb....although i'd still be sucking the hot air out.
whatcha think?

simba? am i correct?

I just recently made a thread listing an EYE bulb i found that i think would be the perfect compliment instead of HPS for CMH.

It provides a very high spectrum similar to incandescent in the 600-700nm, But has very little orange-yellow. It has a cri of 85 which means little, but it does prove that it has some of the blue side of the spectrum. Mind you its very low in lumens do to th drop in the spectrum i mentioned.

This bulb is the EYE specialux, and it seems expensive to me, but at least i can run it in my 150w HPS. I think this bulb plus the CMH would have a nice full spectrum, with not too much blue and lots of red for flowering. You may want to check it out, maybe if i get some good reason i'll buy one and try it as a mixed spectrum with my CMH. It would mak good use of my 150w HPS.

One thing though, i do think this bulb will cause a considerable amount of heat, but than again maybe not.

Anybody have anything on these?

Yes of course I am not defensive but I know the cause of my problem, I came here to inform you of this problem and to ask you which bulbs would be the best to complet the spectrum of the HPS, not to lost my time with some people who do not believe me.

I know temps were not the problem, and UV brutally fall off was the problem.

To resume my temps, if someone still do not understand :

- previous run : in summer, temps between 25°C and +30°C, I did both grow and bloom under CMH 400W, and I had zero hermies

- actual run : in winter, in grow under CMH 400W temps were between 15 and 22°C, in bloom I switch to HPS 600W so temps were a little higher, around 20-25°C, and I had a lot of hermies.

So, temps were not the problem.

I will try to add two neons for reptiles (Arcadia 12% UV(B) 30W 90cm T8), I will fix them on edges of my Adjust a Wing, parallel to my HPS 600W bulb !

I hope this will be suffisant to not have any hermies.

Best vibes to you ! :)

It's not that we don't believe you because we do. We believe that you have stated the facts, and that you believe the cause is the CMH, but there is the possibility that it could be something else. That there were hermies is fact, that it was the fault of the CMH is unproven thus far. You've presented a theory- there's going to be a lot of testing it.

Nice shots! I realize you're asking a question here but I'm not qualified to answer it. I would think either option would work or is at least worth a try. I don't know if anyone here is using those kind of bulbs (purple or reptile) for growing- that's a lot of uv. You may be the first, at least in response to this possible CMH/UV/hermie thing. Please keep us up to date on what you end up choosing and your grow.

the way I have come to understand it about the CMH, the majority of the UV is contained in the bulb itself, and it does not radiate... unless the glass is cracked/removed.

those reptile bulbs actually emit the UV wavelegth. the purple ones are used in the bioresearch and food industries to kill bacteria/germs at the entrances and exit points of research and prep areas.

The purple lights can also be used to kill bacteria on your feet, so the guy at the light shop told me one customer bought one for.

You have to be careful with the purple cfls that are the real deal because they can burn your skin and eyes if exposed directly to them for more than 15min

...nice plants btw

It's simply a best guess, but if those purple/bluish bulbs are UV-C bulbs? The damage caused by those alone could possibly cause herms.
UV-C kills everything within a certain distance & the reason it's used for sterilization. Nasty stuff.

All is good with UV-B, Lizard lights etc. About ready to buy some 10k's myself, just haven't decided on tube or spiral/cfl style yet?

That's the lowdown to the best of my knowledge?

cheers

Hello chef !

spiral/cfl style has better intensity at low distance (10 - 20 cm) but after 30 cm, tube has better intensity.

So I will try to add two tubes (T8 30W, 90 cm)

This test will help you to choose your UV bulb :

Welcome to IC!

Short of buying whole new ballasts (lol...or growing outside), HPS will still get you good results. Although I would ask, do you have access to same or smaller size MH ballasts? I really like the mixed spectrum the CMH provides and it is that same mixed spectrum most strive for with a MH/HPS mix. A lot of the old timers advocated such a mix for good reason!

I do have a ultrasun 400w MH ballast with a unknown matching bulb. The only problem I have is all my lights are hand-me-downs, so to speak, and I like the idea of a CMH bulb that I know where it came from and for so cheap:chin:

Ill do my first grow with my old lights I think..a hps/mh combo.. and do a second comparison grow later 8)

Generic MH and HPS lamps are fairly cheap ($20 or so?) and can usually be had in the 400w flavor at most home improvement stores and certainly electrical supply stores. Lumen maintenance drops off pretty quickly for MH lamps out to about 4000-5000 hours, so you're probably better off getting a new one of those if nothing else.

Just keep an eye out for mag ballasts as you can afford them and you won't regret going with the CMH.

Lots of users have mentioned less than speedy service... send an email and see if you can find out what's up. I bet this thread has driven a lot of business his way!

econolights dot com has 400wHPS bulbs for $6.25, probe start MH ~$9.00, pulse start MH ~$12.00
I have burned one of their (Luma brand) 150hps bulbs for nearly two years now.

hey if we're talking about advancedtech, they were fine for me, i was worried, but i got an email back, and tracking # right away. I think they are paying attention to this forums, as i got an email, regarding a discount per light (10 bucks) and you can order double the quantity you did in the last 12 months with that discount - ordered 4 last 12mo? can get 8@discount; can pm full contents to anyone who had trouble.

i sent it to the two of yall, but my light is here tomorrow, they did me well ☺ (long as it works when it gets here lol)

No track # for me and no email either. It's been eight days. :dunno:
