Why not CMH?

Q:
Will the 400w CMH bulb work with a 430w HPS ballast?

I am also curious about this.
Any advise? Is it a bad idea to even try this? I never really got the 400W vs 430W ballast crap. Figured the 430's were just 400's that were overdriven on something by just sticking in a 430W lamp.

Thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks!

whats better for flowering hps or cmh? does one run hotter then the other? penetrate farther? what other pros and cons? I did search but cant find much.

Hi Flyin,

Here is a link to the sticky in the growroom designs and equipment forum. Ceramic Metal Halide

If you read all 200 plus pages all your questions will be answered. Otherwise at least read the first few pages. A lot of the information is covered in the first post.

Where did you get yours from? I got mine from Advanced Tech and have been running 2 400W CMH for 4380 hours+ and have had NO problems. (I know it's about time for me to replace my bulbs). My last Hortilux bulb burnt out after only 3 months before I made the switch to CMH.

As for the person asking about if they burn as hot as a HPS, CMH are certainly cooler.

Not to start an argument, just curious as to why so many people use Hortilux and the sort. I tossed out 4 brand new 400w Hortilux bulbs after my first run with te Phillips MasterColor Retro-White 400w CMH bulbs. It has been 3 1/2yrs since and some other curators that I know can't believe the difference in node spacing, taste yield and quality between mine and theirs. I get the Phillips for 38.00 dollars US. It has been a great lesson in Lumens meaning nothing! Spectrum is first, output is secondary to PAR/Spectrum. I know that the Phillips has a shorter life (15,000hrs or so) but so what. It is like having a hortilux blue + extra red output for cheap and it runs on an HPS ballast (low frequency only).

Again this is my experience and not wanting a pissing match. If I was more internet savy I would post a link to the Phillips web page and tech info.

PEACE form Azeotrope :rasta:

They TASTE better? lol

I'm flowering the same stain in separate cabs, one under HPS one under CHM - day 10 so far . . .

A local grow shop has them and first the 250 showed up on NGW's catalog as a retro white conversion lamp and I picked up a catalog the other day that has the 400 listed as well. I figure we'll start seeing them more. I don't think a lot of the shops will stock them because they only push hortilux. And since all shops push so hard for hortilux then they must make the biggest profit on that one. Shit I bought a ballast the other day and before I could pick a bulb he already had an eye hort rang up.

I'm having a hard time between t5 and cmh, got buy in a week or so
