I own a fast food joint. Let's say I offered a regular beef patty. with lettuce and tomato, for $58.00 USD

HoW would you explain someone who would purchase such a burger?

Is there a psychological principal that would explain why a person would buy a regular burger for $58?

It could be anything, an apple that sells for 20 bucks.

How do you explain a person how purchases an ordinary product for an extraordinary price?

i'm no psychology student, but that is called getting clowned.

or maybe the person is too timid to fight-back the obvious super-charge for that burger...

you get clowned in the end either way...

human primal instinct,

society is bombarding people with our basic human instincts, sex fighting and food, so it produces the type that only become locked into these primal drives.

I took psyc. in high school, and it might have something to do with hindsight theory (not exactly sure if its that theory) but with such price tag people subconciously associate it as better than lets say a $5 burger, therfore buying a fucking $60 burger lol.

will that next bowl get you any higher? good enough already save it then.

like walmart go there save money easy, compared to local store they get it cheap.
so you pay 58$ who care, you have no ethic towards energy then. the time to make the burger..

but then you are selling this item, 58$ infused beef..so how much are you paying. could be just store beef for cheap 10$ per lb right. u make 1/4 burgers u make profit.

to most understanding a 58$ for one meal, one item of a meal is gross. wasted energy, selfishness make people buy these items. hummerH2 big ticket useless items to make them FEEL better about emotions. feel happy, maybe this 58$ purchase and experience will induce happiness to this person. for how long though. could that energy have been put to better use.

we all know facts but we need to ask ourselves how we feel about them.

set and setting my friend. I hardly think you would sell a 58 dollar burger out of a McDonalds type of resteraunt, but, if you created a fine dining atmosphere and spared no expense in making the joint the swankiest and hippest place around, then you would have at least a foundation for charging so much. First create the demand, then supply it;)

You have to tell people, that they want to, no they NEED this 58 dollar burger in their life, or else they may die and the world will end

They had a $12 burger at this restaraunt I used to deliver food for.

They also had a $30, $60, and $80 steak. I wanted to sample my deliveries like a mad man.

I think the age of the cure and the high quality sauces used to marinate the meat had something to do with the price, along with the head Chef's massive gut.

That reminds me, there is also a $180 bottle of balsemic vinegar at the Ralphs not to far from the house. I've got to try this vinegar one day.

I don't think any particular psychological diagnosis comes into play here.

I think it would have to be explained by lack of intelligence.

Maybe some kind of narcissism would account for it...the person might think that they would be showing superiority by buying the best burger in the world, as in..."I only buy the best, because I am the best."

Narcissists say the damndest things. :)

I can't see any place peddling $58 burgers staying open for too long.

Unless there is some chick giving me a blow job while I'm eating my burger, I'll pass thanks.

You're in NYC eating dinner with some clients that you are about to make a big deal with.

That's about the only way I could see it happening.

Besides, I'm only in PSY 101 this semester... haha

to some extent (but with such a large price most obviously wouldn't)

They might be easily persuaded by adverts (actually believe the claims). Lack of intelligence, no knowledge of the economy. Starvation? no other option? Enough money that being thrifty is unimportant.

what if going to the store buying some food for a certain fair price wasnt available in your area?

you will eat what is. to live, 58$ while a smart business move to maximize potential profit it requires some1 to actually make the decision to purchase this item

but why would some1 purchase any item they know they could get for cheaper elsewhere... one thing

CONVENIENCE this is the word?.. ya got that loot, lets get a round for all. were eating stfu this is good

ive paid that much for a few meals haha you can justify the burger at $58 and just give great service and explain all that detail of the ingredients and process the burger went through to get to you. ie rarest earth organic ingredients that traveled across the world to reach them blah blah blah infused with gold etc....haha

I'm no psych student, but I'll certainly give you my opinion if you want it.

In one word, Marketing.

Build up the perception that your "ordinary" burger is much better than all the other burgers (even though many are similar) and therefore is worth the "slightly higher price" and make your possible customers believe that they'll be part of a unique group of free thinkers if they eat your burgers.

Take a look at companies that offer products that are markedly similar to other products yet fetch a higher price. The way they get customers is through clever marketing and advertising.

One need only look at Starbucks and Apple as examples (but one could really look at any other market--one thinks of hydro nutrients for one).

Both offer products that are very similar (one could even say inferior to some other alternatives), but yet they've done fairly well by targeting their marketing.

That and market it to rich white kids.

Regarding my psych background. I've taken Intro to Psych, Developmental Psych, and I'm in Ed Psych now.
