I found this interesting..I may have to plan a trip to that wonderful state.

ASPEN — A version of Amsterdam's “Cannabis Cup” is coming to Aspen, in which medical marijuana growers, providers, patients and others in the industry will convene over one weekend in April.

The First Annual Western Slope Cannabis Crown, organized by Glenwood Springs resident Bobby Scurlock and the owners of High Country Caregivers, will be held April 17-18 at the Gant.

The conference is open to the public and will include speakers, live music, information booths, and most notably, a competition among providers that showcases their best strains. Growers and providers will vie for the “cannabis crown.”

Scurlock said he hopes to draw about 50 dispensaries from around Colorado and their strains will be tested by Denver-based Full Spectrum Laboratories. The marijuana strains will be diagnostically tested for THC levels and how well they match up with patients' ailments.

There also will be a “people's choice” award for those who are on the state registry for medical marijuana and have received a “golden ticket” from one of the organizers. The people's choice will narrow down the field for the crown but the ultimate winner will be based on the diagnostic test, Scurlock said.

“We want to get the best of the best in there,” he said. “We want as many vendors as possible.”

Only Colorado registered medical marijuana users will be able to buy products from vendors, which will have to occur outside of the conference — most likely in a private condo or room where the providers are staying.

“This is not about pot heads running around the streets,” Scurlock said. “This conference is to enlighten people and talk about the benefits, and its economic impact.”

Scurlock said the event is nearly sold out; about 1,500 tickets have been sold. The $25 ticket buys admission to the two-day event.

Proceeds from raffles will benefit disaster relief for Haiti. Items to be raffled include grow room kits, vaporizers and other merchandise.

Nathan Traul, co-owner of High Country Caregivers, said as many as 400 strains could be showcased at the conference, as well as an edibles category.

So far, about 40 strains have been entered.

“The reception has definitely been great,” Traul said. “We're excited about the event.”

Scurlock hopes that this year's event is successful enough that it can grow into a week-long conference next year.

Scurlock said the crown's website is currently being built and has limited information. Participants can log onto westernslopecannabis.com, which will allow them to book a room at the Gant.

I really don't think a machine can tell how good medicine is.

if the most THC wins that doesn't make sense to me. I have that elephant strain, it's strong. But it's not good.

I'm also wondering if you need to be a CO resident to go to the event? I read this:

Only Colorado registered medical marijuana users will be able to buy products from vendors, which will have to occur outside of the conference — most likely in a private condo or room where the providers are staying.

but can I still enter, and do they check cards at the booths, etc?

these things are always $$ oriented. i would never enter a strain to a cannabis cup when it is $$ oriented. hidden motives always prevail......

I think you need a colorado med card to enter or test strains not to sure though. Just guessing.

They say they want the best of the best and as many "Vendors" (new term on me for gardener, farmer, or botanist) as possible.

Let's play nice CO and recognize paperwork from ANY MMJ state.

Peace, :joint:

hope it turns out better than the Smoke Out by Cypress Hill and the CheeChongsters in So Cal
I wasn't even allowed to take an open pack of smokes or matches in there

I think the rule is no cross state reciprocity on the med licenses, hence the requirment that you be from Colorado. No sense telling LEO you will be openly breaking the law.

I agree that using a machine to evaluate the buds has no place at this sort of event. How does a machine evaluate smell, or taste, or visual appearance, etc...? If it's just "the highest THC wins" couldn't you theoretically take a mexi-brick (remember that?) bud and dip it in BHO and win?"???

Since when did vendors or dispensaries breed their own strains??? None do where I'm from.... Shouldn't the people breeding and creating the strains be entering the "cup"? It seems like who ever has the best cuts will prevail. None of this makes any sense.

Not to mention that it is judged by a lab and not the patients themselves. Is it about the movement anymore or just money?

I think they should do it like ICMAG 420 CUP, with a breeder and grower section, would be much better. There are a lot of CO strains, breeding done here, I just tried some 303 Kush the other day was phenom. I just think that they should have different cat.
