Lighting question

I have a small box going. It's 19 in length x 11 inch wide. I recently germ'd my seeds and the sprouts are standing up now, no leaves yet. I flipped it to 24/0 and with two 13w cfls I'm worried. I opened the door, so much heat in there. I am getting two 80mm pc fans installed as soon as I can. Right now I'm wondering whether to not flip it yet. Is it possible it could start fire?

The outlets are old ones used for photographs, no ballast in them though.

Do a search for "Bonsai Mums" and read up. You have a lot of work to do so don't worry, you have time.

Basically keep your babies as "Mum's" until your box is ready. Until then, you can keep them on 24/0 with the door open or something. They'll stay small as you keep trimming them bonsai style.

Once you have the temps and airflow issues all hammered out with your box.... look into cloning. Practice until you can clone reliably. :)

I like to have a separate veg box. I keep my mums in there and flower the clones in the flower chamber. You'll have to flower out some clones to find out which plant is female. (Don't forget to label them properly so you know which clone came from which mum. :D )

The most important thing you can do is READ READ READ. :D It's going to be 2-3 months before you should start taking cuttings off of your bonsai Mum's.... read as much as you possibly can before then and finish your box(es). :D

Stay Safe! :tree:

Why 2 fans? A single will do just fine. Question is, how to feed them? Ventilation for Dummies says, Intake exceeds Exhaust 2:1. A single matching intake will choke the fan and reduce cooling. Whatever you use to cut the exhaust port, use it twice more at the bottom for intakes.

Note that four 1" holes total 1/4 the size of a single 4" hole (3.14 si vs 12.56 si) The example below is 9" but, makes the point.

you do not need one fan blowing in and one blowing out!
use only one fan blowing out. It will do a much better job that way.

It'll do a much better job if you have two or three exhaust fans and no intake fans. But the sones/decibels will 'dramatically' increase.

I posted some figures for this on the fan thread - I found them on a computer forum. Here they are for anyone interested.

Sounds are additive, but not in a simple linear way.

* Two 30 dB noise sources make 33 dB
* Four 30 dB noise sources make 36 dB
* Eight 30 dB noise sources make 39 dB
* Sixteen 30 dB noise sources make 42 dB

Ok, the pc fan's were to fail to being with. Antec ones both made 30 dB and I was lazy to set them up XD. Instead I now have a 9 in floor fan. I am going to put it in the door way open sorta. Two 1 inch pvc pipes, on each side, will serve as carbon filters and exhaust.

Hey bro, that sounds not good if I understand you right. You don't want any doors open. You need to supply them with unadulterated darkness during lights off, and most people are looking for some kind of stealth at lights on. You want it to function if you're not there too. If you look at most cabs they follow a standard sort of idea. You have an 80mm fan so I will illustrate for that.

  • 80mm exhaust hole at the top of cab, with fan blowing out.
  • 2 or more 80mm holes at the bottom as passive intakes, no fans.
  • One carbon filter just before the exhaust fan.
  • The other 80mm fan blowing on the lights/plants

This is the standard idea you will see most. It works and it's worth following or using as a start point. Maybe I misunderstood with the one inch pipes but that sounds like trouble brewing. I would suggest making a diagram of your plan so people can point stuff out easier. Hope it helps.

It is in unadulterated darkness. It's under an old table type thing that was once for hobby working. It's shoved against the wall and the cab is in the very back, with other boxes covering it. And I will use a cloth to keep most of the light in.

How do you propose that the filter is going to work with the door open? Which type of cloth keeps in smell?

Bad Juju.

For an 80 mm fan, you'll want a minimum of ten (10) 1 inch pipes.

And like the song says, "Close the door, Richard."

Man rigging the 80mm is going to be a pain in the butt, I'll try but I'll sub with this one for now.

c'mon son you cant wire a fan? Im retarded to say the least and i got around to doing it...its basically the same as wiring a vanity....takes 2-5 minutes. Anyways i see a complete fail if you dont wire them fans BUT GOOOD LUCK!!!
also just read through this forum to find out info to wire the antec fans.
GOOD LUCK MATE!

I can't wire it atm because I don't have the necessary adapters. I just placed an order for a 4pin molex to outlet adapter. Should be here soon, in the meantime I will pick up some 6 inch wide pvc pipe, 1 on each side. These will act as the carbon filters.

Thinking of mounting the fan on the front of the door and have it hitting the lights.
