Extraordinary Shed

This is no ordinary shed.

First off, it's a pre-fab shed that's framed and built similar to a home. 16" OC 2x4 studs, double plywood & shingle roof. Plywood flooring. Very basic framework in an expensive package... but hey, it means you don't have to do it!

Of course that's just the ordinary shed. We want an extraordinary shed, and we're gonna build one! Here's the basic layout:

  • Roughly 10' x 12'
  • Sealed environment
  • Stealth is important
  • 4,000w

Many considerations were taken into place, including simply having non-air-cooled hoods and cooling using an air conditioner.

One problem is that this house was limited to 100A, and was home to a family that was already drawing quite a power bill, pre-grow. Not a ton of power to play with, so the choice was limiting to 4000w and saving extra amps by air-cooling instead of running a larger A/C. Although a larger-than-expected capacity unit with an inverter was chosen for future- and season-proofing. (18,000 BTU) Bottled CO2... room sealed very tight and should not need frequent fills.

So we have 4kw, top-drip coco DTW ('cuz that's how I roll), air-cooled hoods in a sealed environment.

Stealth is a high concern and priority, so extra measures have been taken where possible w/o going too deep into the budget book. Some features include:

  • Double-thick 5/8" FC drywall

  • Duct muffler / silencer

  • Inside of all ducts painted black

Now the problems presented with this shed is that it doesn't come with a ceiling, so I had to build one. Well, I chose to for many reasons, some of which you will see. More pictures of attic tomorrow (ballast, storage, etc all there).

Another is that it's just an empty shell as described in the first post, so everything had to manually be done to it... insulation (R-13 walls, Reflectix on roof, R-19 on ceiling), drywall, electric, plumbing, ventilation, cooling.

Putting in the extra framework for drywall backing on the slanted edges to achieve an 8' ceiling was also necessary, otherwise you'd get something like 6.5'.

This was a 1-man build, including the ceiling work w/o drywall joist. I do regret not renting one for $40. Also spent much more time than anticipated on drywall, primarily because I got lazy and didn't want to go pick up more sheets from the store and chose to use remainder cut pieces and patch in 1" - 2" gaps. A time & labor costly mistake I will likely not make again.

But hey, it's all done, right?

Thanks.

Next project coming up: 35kw flower, from ground up. Should be interesting.

Hey there you are GN, lookin good, I thought about using a shed once, but it was too close to my neighbors yards and they would have heard the hum from it.

There is no humming from this one. 1.25" of FC drywall does wonders. So do duct mufflers.
