I have an apartment inspection on monday!

thanks guys! some other good ideas there

however i had some unnerving news come my way... I guess since it's never occurred to me, but i heard the fire department checks every suite every year as well. I wonder if they look for hazards or just smoke alarms.. any rate this disconcerts me.

to add to the tips this time of year a couple sticks of cinnamon on the stove in a pot of water on the lowest heat does wonders and puts you in the holiday spirit as well

Not that my comment really contributes to the subject of this thread but there is no way I would EVER grow in ANY rental place...

Considering who has uncontrolled access to a place one doesn't own AND is growing in...what a feeling it must be returning home whether it is from work or other activities not knowing if "someone" may be "waiting" for you due to a discovery made...

they give lots of notice at least a week usually depending on the size of your building and they will ask that you leave a key with the concierge / building manager if you have changed the locks. They are generally really quick about these fire inspections, simply checking the fire alarms to make sure they work. they come in with a spray or a rod with a flame on the end of it and spray each one really fast or hold the flame up to it... that's it and they're on to the next one. Once a year is the general protocol for most municipalities in Canada...

I do have a friend that has owned his condo for the last 6 years and tells me that he hasn't opened the door for one of these so called mandatory fire inspection checks and he's never had a problem. He's never there and they usually just slip a notice under his door telling him about it. He has changed the locks though...

what a crock. thanks very much for that tid bit, here i was knocking knees over the fire inspection, as the other one went according to plan, but THANKFULLY i took the necessary precautions, ie teardown=(

Yeah, they are usually accompanied by either a rep from a private company that is licensed to by the city to do these inspections, or a member from the fire dept and they are very quick, very thorough unfortunately for growers (but not for people who don;t like their apt burnt down lol) and very efficient...

what if i only have one smoke alarm? think they will still go INTO the bedroom, INTO the bathroom, snooping around for...something? seems highly suspicious to me, even for mr fireman watchdog.

yeah, the grow spooks me out. sometimes i wonder if i can keep fighting the odds, alas i continue.

Hey guys just thought id throw in my two cents since i found this thread really interesting. The particular house that I reside in gets regular "marijuana inspections" and its included in the lease. And its legal. I live in BC and seems growing "problems" are so intense here that you can include a section in your lease that allows the owner/manager to inspect the property every month (I think its every month, not sure though). Its crazy.

If you only have one smoke alarm then chances are they will be well aware that, especially if you live in a building with a lot of units. Before they start they know the floor plans and they are not interested in anything but completing this inspection and testing each one. Any inspection that I've experienced (I've lived in 3 dif buildings that have done this) they're in and out very quick and they know exactly where to go and they just go there, test, then leave. This could be because I was in the middle area of the inspection lists and by the time they got to my unit they already knew each suites floor plan inside out but remember they have a lot of units to get through and they have a job to do...

If they try and get into your room, make light of the fact about u getting locked out this morning when ur gf left and reschedule if they really need to get in (even if it's a 1bdrm)...

That's crazy that you accepted that level of disturbance into your own private domain bro. I live in BC as well and yes everyone knows tons of people grow but I've never seen that clause as part of a rental contract nor would I sign one including that clause. Of course, landlords do have the ability to schedule an inspection at anytime with written notice and at least 24 hours notice legally according to the BC landlord tenancy act:

A tenant is entitled to exclusive possession of a rental unit, including reasonable privacy, and quiet and peaceful enjoyment.
A landlord may enter the tenant's home only under the following circumstances:

  • there is an emergency such as a fire, damaged or blocked pipes or flooding;
  • the tenant is at home and agrees to let the landlord in;
  • the tenant agreed, not more than 30 days before, to let the landlord in for a certain reason;
  • the tenant has abandoned the rental unit;
  • the landlord has a dispute resolution officer's order or court order to enter the rental unit;
  • the landlord has given the tenant written notice at least 24 hours and not more than 30 days in advance. The notice must give the reasons for entering and the time at which the landlord will enter the rental unit. The reasons must be valid and the time in the rental unit must fall between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., unless the tenants agree to another time.
I would've just found a dif unit if that is what they wanted from you playa. A tenant has a right to quiet enjoyment of their rental property, resource linked

Hey intl. I was constrained in some other things when I was finding a place. Unfortunately growing had to be more something that I looked at last in terms of where I lived. But hey its worked out thus far - knock on wood - so I cant complain really I guess. Its a more a problem when the manager comes over and complains about the shitty state of the kitchen or something.
