An up-and-coming Canadian folk-singer, Taylor Mitchell, has been killed by a pack of coyotes while hiking in Nova Scotia. The 19-year-old singer-songwriter from Toronto was set upon as she walked alone in the Cape Breton Highlands national park and died of bite wounds in hospital.

Other hikers heard the singer's screams during the attack on Tuesday and called for help. When Mounties arrived they shot one of the animals, but it escaped. They found Mitchell in a critical condition with bites over her entire body.

She was airlifted to hospital in Halifax, but died the next day. Paul Maynard of Canada's Emergency Health Services said Mitchell "was losing a considerable amount of blood from the wounds," when help arrived.

The trail has been sealed off and parks officials are trying to hunt down the animals to find out why they attacked a human. It has been reported that one of the animals was later shot dead. Park superintendent Helene Robichaud said there had been reports of aggressive animals in the past "but we certainly never have had anything so dramatic and tragic".

Coyotes, which also are known as prairie wolves, are found throughout north America, but wildlife biologist Bob Bancroft said attacks on humans are extremely rare. He said the animals may have thought Mitchell was a deer.

The park where Mitchell was killed is home to far more dangerous animals including bears, cougars and lynx.

Mitchell was in the region on tour promoting her first album, For Your Consideration. Earlier this month she was nominated for the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards in the young performer of the year category.

Her manager Lisa Weitz described Mitchell as a "sweet, compassionate, vibrant, and phenomenally talented young woman".

I don't believe they attacked her..I have been in a rural area where there are hundreds of coyotes and have never heard of one comming with-in a hundred feet of a human. They are usually scared to death of humans and run at the sight of us. I've never seen a pack..maybe two together mousing in a meadow but never a pack. Nova Scotia..wolves my guess and that is very possible..I don't buy coyotes..the press is mistaken..sorry. DD

you have to consider the circumstances

a 19 year old girl alone in the woods,is pretty much a prime target for a hungry coyote pack, they are opportunistic "hunters" by nature...and i'ed have to think if it were a wolf pack, they would have gotten the job done,so to speak..

sad tho,must suck

I'm with doobie , in as much that this is super odd?

doobie ,I think coyotes would be more likely to attack a person than wolves, it happens on occasion in Cali(your state) where the coys go after children and of course pets in peoples yards.
coyotes are far more tolerant of people than wolves, mainly due to their habitat preferences and population numbers/explosion.
my guess would be something is amiss in the local food chain.

Either way, tragic! not a plesant way to be killed I would think.

"Since the late 1970s, there have been at least 111 coyote attacks on humans in Southern California, resulting in 136 people being bitten, said Rex Baker, a retired Cal Poly Pomona professor who has studied the region's coyotes."

Mr-B

I've hunted my entire life and coyotes are scared of their own shadows.
I hunt Yotes during the winter months in Nevada for their coats and to help the farmers and ranchers get rid of them.

Yotes will take a fawn or calve and eat it alive, it's a tragedy when the deer and elk population is as low as it is here.

I believe the reporter got it wrong and meant to say it was wolves. Wolves will attack a human, no problem. I've never seen more than 3 yotes together at a time unless it was a mom with youngins.

If it was yotes then it's so uncommon, hell, it's probably a first.

Actually, Cape Breton NAtional PArk coyotes are "coywolves", hybrids of wolves & coyotes, and the result is probably a more agressive species than coyotes or wolves.

Well that hybrid theory could explain it.

Tragically wasted talent. She had a wonderful voice... at such a young age with the entire world ahead of her... :badday:

There are shit loads of coyotes in Wolves/Canada, we got a butt load in Ontario alone. I got buddies that have farms and they set up a motion censor cameras and bait the Wolves/Coyotes with food. Once the wolves/Coyotes get near, my buddies grab there rifles and sit on there deck and shoot them.

They really cause problems on my buddies farms, Trying to get at the sheep, and chickens and other animals.

I can believe this for sure, if there hungry and there isn't alot of food around for them, for sure they would attack a single person walking around there Territory.

I was unaware they had coyotes up there, that's too bad.

This reaffirms why I carry one of these when hiking.

How awful. I've seen a few coyotes in my day and always assumed I could kick the shit out of one if need be. Maybe I need to rethink that.

Some coyotes are afraid of humans & some aren't depending on the location of their habitat and the amount of interaction a specific region will have with humans. This story isn't that surprising at all, just a little more rare than being attacked by mountain lions/cougars. Maybe they aren't even technically coyotes, as someone said above..

When I'd go hunting or walking in the woods I always carry a pistol w/me, never can tell
when we'll cross the path of a black bear w/cubs which can be deadly for me or my dogs.
Wolf, coyote, cougar, w/my limp I might look like an easy target.......

well I have been scent marked by a friends wolf in a midwestern state and having had the experience of being licked like a lollypop by a 200 pound wolf,I can say that a hybrid between a coyote and a wolf would have a more aggressive disposition, and all animals will get more aggressive when they are hungry.I know of one particular story where a female was attacked in campground mauled and was later found out to have been menstrating at the time.so conjecture aside it's apossbility in taylors case, but what a shitty way to go
i just got an email of a burglur who tried to killa pitball by hitting it over the head the pitbull turned and mauled his attacker to death in a gruesome fashion.I am going to post the pic's its absolutely foul.

I am not one to push away food for any reason, but this pic made me pause. I apoligise if this is too offensive, but is in keeping with my stance about animal nature:leave it alone and it will leave you alone.

lmao. priceless pics. crime and punishment at its finest. my theory on what ever it was that attacked her is she was confronted and had a typical female reaction (sorry ladies ;)) shreek and run. a prey reaction. hungry or not instinct kicks in. prey run, predators chase.
