I run a trimeter by Nutradip . It tells PPM , PH and temp. Its constant monitoring and lets you know whats up at a glance.

Again, thanks for all of the great advice.

I really didn't mean to stir the pot with my sarcastic remark earlier.....but wow - a lot of comments are appreciated.....

This is my first DWC so I think I'll do the drop tests for ph and buy a cheaper tds/ec/ppm.....

My plant that is in the DWC isn't looking so great anyway and I don't think it's going to make it.

It was vegged in soil for 4 weeks and then transferred to a 5 gallon DWC with a 4" net pot.

She wasn't happy about the transplant at all.

So again, thanks to everyone for the very helpful comments and I apologize for the previous comment. . .:respect:

I read this first sentence and though "Uh oh!" Then I read the next sentence. :) Soil and hydro don't mix well which you've now learned. Start your plants in a bubbler or rockwool cubes for your next grows. The transplant shock will be much, much less or none at all.

I'd also add a res temp sensor to the list of gadgets. High res temps are the #1 issue in DWC. Best to be on top of any res temp issues by keeping an eye on it. I think several companies make combo temp/ppm meters. You actually need a temp sensor to get accurate ppm readings but some don't have a readout for the temp.

Hanna 98130. It's kind of expensive, but worth every penny

I second this!! Expensive indeed, but damned if I don't love it! I have DWC as well, and this little thing is easy to plop in the buckets..plus its waterproof!

PPM and TDS are simply EC converted to lies. For EC the uncontested leader is the Bluelab EC Truncheon. No calibration required, minimal maintenance (wash the tip once a month)

A $5 pH test drop kit from the aquarium store is accurate to 0.1, uses no batteries, requires no maintenance.
