Why is medical marijuana so expensive?

From what I understand, buds are sold from between 20 and 30 bucks a gram or 60 bucks or so an eighth.

I know places that give out free herb if you really need it and they have $25 eighths of generic meds.. the herb you are reffering to is "namebrand"..and that my friend is economics 101 or supply vs demand...

you know what i cant stand...

how some patients give up the rights to grow their own and sign a dispensary/caregiver to grow for them and the patient gets only an 1/8-1/2oz for doing so..!? wtf.. if a patient is signing some1 as their primary caregiver shouldnt the caregiver atleast be giving the patients free meds every week or atleast an oz or 2 come harvest.!?!
tons of caregivers here in colorado offer discount meds for signing them as primary and little to nothing for free. lets see.. sigh them as your caregiver and still pay 275-300oz fuking BS to say the least

In Michigan, our law stipulates the patient OWNS each plant grown under their name.
The caregiver is to be compensated for their time and efforts but, doling it out by the eighth ounce @ $$0 is illegal. Unfortunately those who drive the community in Michigan promote the status quo for the benefit of the caregiver, contrary to the patients benefit and Law.

I grow my own and promote each patients efforts to do the same.
I do not believe nor promote a 'professional class' caregiver industry.

In California, caregivers have to prove that they were the primary caregiver for that person, including things such as housing, food and money. Just supplying someone with medical marijuana has been ruled to NOT be a caregiver situation and offers you no protection from the law.

Colorado Dept. of Health tried to define caregivers as having to provide services as well as MMJ. They failed, the rules are now written so caregivers can provide services or MMJ. This was the same rulemaking that did away with the de-facto 5 patient limit per caregiver.

My suggestion is to start teaching some of these patients to grow their own. I know some of them probably are physically unable, but with the help of a family member they might be able to succeed in doing it.

I'm sure it's next thing to impossible with the street price of bud to find a caregiver that's actually going to abide by the rules and turn the bud over to the patient at a reasonable cost. It sounds like a lot of so called "caregivers" are simply using the patient as a cover for them to sell the bud commercially or back to them for commercial prices....

What about the medical cost of AIDS drugs or high end anti-cancer drugs. Why in the world any person on ICmag say one harsh word towards a grower when the big pharma companies are running countries? Anyone want to ship me kegs of super high quality beer. I'm a medical patient and need the equivalent of a keg of Stone IPA a week! Unfortunately for me I can't home brew for shit, but I can make a Purple Kush. If you are a TRUE medical patient then you are in SUPER LUCK! Because this is a WEED, that's right moron's high on kush and drunk on beer can do it (just look at the thread in my sig). You know what I did when I got tired of sketchy connections and bad weed? I looked around, found some good genetics, and thanked god for OverGrow and every thing I learned there. Funny thing, ICmag is giving away the best knowledge in the world for people to grow a weed, but some people want a 1 gram nug to pop out of their screen every time they log in; funny the current universe doesn't work that way.

Peace my stoned and hard working friends, :joint:

Holy shit. Now you're comparing a caregiver to a doctor or a group of scientists that spend years in labs developing medicines?

A caregiver is someone who has agreed to supply and grow weed for a patient. Plant the seed, water it, set the timers and check the plants for 5 minutes a day.

If this isn't good enough for you, then you should be a commercial dealer, not a caregiver...

:fsu: There are many AMAZING caregivers here on ICmag and to say "check the plants for 5 minutes a day." you might as well kick us all in the nuts.

Do you "check ICmag 5 minutes a day?"

Peace, :joint:

There are these really great books by Ayn Rand about this debate that this thread is all about.

Some people think that businesses should sell there product for cheaper than what the market will bring. A set price that somebody decides. (communism) Some people think that it is fine to sell it for whatever people will pay for it. (capitalism)

Communism promotes laziness. If the same guy working his ass off, and has innovative ideas to make things better gets rewarded the same as the slacker, that posts on icmag all day while getting paid to be doing something else, why would the smarter and more motivated guy work any harder? He won't. He will go get a menial job where he can get high all day and not have any of the stresses associated with running your own business. He will clock out at 5, and work is over.

Capitalism promotes innovation and ambition. America was born on these principals. That is why there is so much innovation here. Create an incentive and people will jump for it. Business owners do not clock out at 5, they are working almost all the time. Thats because they know they are going to be rewarded for it. Shouldn't they be?

Grower = innovator, risk taker, motivated. Should get rewarded.

non-grower/complainer of high prices = feels entitled to others success.

Stop whining and grow it. What is holding you back? No one held my hand. No one bank rolled me. The difference is, I don't waste my time feeling entitled. The sooner you realize the world doesn't owe you shit, the sooner you will see yourself starting to make things happen for yourself. Like saving 500 bucks and buying a light and some bags of soil, and planting a seed. It is easy, if all you want is smoke. It can be a financial disaster if you are trying to make money doing it.

Point is, if you take out the incentives for doing something, no one is going to do it. Than what do you have? No product. Kinda like what happened in Russia. Why would anyone work hard and extra hours if they can just do the minimum and get paid the same? What you are asking for, is for growers to work for standard wages. No one is going to take the risk associated with this business or any business for standard wages.

Seriously, check out the Ayn Rand books. She grew up in Russia, tells the whole story about what it is like to be in a society where the innovators and motivated do not get rewarded. They leave.

What the hell does being logged into ICmag got to do with growing weed for someone as a caregiver?

And I guess I shouldn't have said 5 min a day. It takes me five minutes to water the plants and then I don't look at them again for 3 days. That's what timers are for.

I've grown this wonderful plant for 30 years now and I get sick of listening to people say how it takes hrs a day to grow great bud. As I said, I go days without looking at them. You don't need to sit there and stare at them to make them grow. I know my rooms, and I know what the temps are going to be with the lights on, and with them off.

Why do so many people say that it takes a great deal of time to grow quality bud? It doesn't.......

I have no problem with a commercial grower charging a good dollar for his product. He's chancing his freedom and his life. But lets not confuse commercial growing to being a caregiver.

Again, a care giver is someone who enters into an agreement with a medically needy person to grow herb for that person and to be compensated for the TIME and EXPENSES he has into the grow. It's also legal in the state they are growing in, so unless your growing 100 plants, your freedom isn't in jeopardy. But caregivers now want the weed to be worth what it is on the street. If you want to sell commercially, so be it.....

So you've taken 30 years and dialed in rooms, guess what it is a weed and can do its thing for days on end, that doesn't mean top shelf medical product can be produced by just anyone and left for days unattended.

I put time into this hobby because I'd like to improve. I use my brain EVEN when I am staring at my plants.

If you'd like to help I am looking to improve my gram per square foot day. My last run of PK in 50 square feet yielded 49.5oz on 56 day flower or .5grms per square foot per day. I am looking to get better. Are your rooms kicking at more than .5grms per square foot per day?

Peace, :joint:

I wonder what Ayn Rand (RUSH & Getty Lee are a big fan BTW) would have to say about socialism?

To me Socialism is the in between of what you just said.

Capitalism is allowed to happen for certain sectors of industry but when it come to things like health care then society as a whole needs to compromise so that EVERYONE can be entiltled to health care.

Not everything should be capitalistic. There are certain things like health care that are more important then things like profit.

Canada has better health care then the US and they are more similar to Russia then the US so something must be working right.

I use my brain EVEN when I am staring at my plants.

I hope so considering that's where 90% of the quality of the plant takes place and I think this is what JJ is getting at.

Many here just trial and error when if you know all the facts ahead of time and can account for them the plant will essentially grow itself if given the right parameters. These can be automated to the point of little human interaction. BUT you need to have the experience to set up the parameters.

I have a quarter ounce of PK ready to smoke with any and all who want to come by and discuss Ayn Rand.

Capitalisim: The Unknow Ideal. is the book you are looking for. Crazy that Alen Greenspan wrote chapter 5 on the gold standard. This book was published almost 50 years or so ago.

All her other works are amazing but above and Atlas Shrugged are most on point.

I'll even smoke out you collectiveists / stateists if you get you ass to my town and have read Ms. Rand.

You have to bring the Stone IPA because I have a NEED so please Give it to me. My need is all that matters now you go and produce.

JJ- no offense but a setup like the one you are running in say your g-13 diesel grow may not take much but that is small. Growing takes anything more than just personal smokage takes commitment, and a lot of time. multiply what you do JJ, times 2 for every 25 more plants...etc

to each his own, the amount of work you put in is usually reflected in the end product, though I will admit a good percentage of time working is actually just scheming!

When I say risk, I am not necessarily talking about risking freedom. I meant all the risks. Mainly financial. If you are running a business, being a lot of peoples caregiver, that is a business model that I think needs to be run the same as any business. If it is not very profitable to run a caregiver business, not very many people will do it. I am in this for the money, AND the love for the product. I am not going to pretend that my main motivation is to help people out. I want to help people out, but that is not why I am doing it. If I was not getting paid well for this, I would not be working 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, risking ridiculous amounts of money. I would be doing something that has much less risk involved, and would not have to work late into the evening.

Just so you know though, I sell my medicine for cheaper than anyone else. Its not because I am trying to help people out, it is because I understand how capitalism works. I can produce more with less because of my innovations, and I want to be competitive. The reason I want to be competitive, is so I (me, me, me!) will win. I win, the customer wins. The price gouger loses. Capitalism.

I agree, with you, there is a balance. I think Ayn Rand went to extremes with her story, she lived it personally, but she brought up an amazing point.

And Rush kicks ass!

I don't think you understand what I am saying.

As a caregiver, you're not going to worry about getting the extra weight. You could set up one 600 watt digital in their spare bedrrom and grow them all the weed they would need, lol. Do you understand now?

If you're growing commercially you try and squeeze every gram you possibly can. It's the nature of the beast.

.5 GPW isn't bad at all. It's better than average for dry weed. Make sure to take the time when they are young to let them dry out completely so the roots have to grow to look for water. The better the root system the more weight you are going to get off a plant. Theres plenty of time to over water them when they get older....
