school is for specializations...

that being said, i don't think life is just about being "happy" or "content" or whatever fairytale idea your brain has you thinking... its LIFE man, just ride the waves as best you can

Let me just give some background. I dont attend a community college, i attend a state chartered university with one of the best public policy programs (my major)in the nation.

I enjoy school and being around people my age, but everyday i just feel like they teach you what the bureaucracy wants them to teach. they are just bureaucrats working for higher level bureacrats. Right now im on track to be a city planner or working in economic development in urban settings, but i feel like i have my entire life to come back to the states and get that piece of paper.

Right now I have ZERO debt, ALOT of nice stuff that i could sell, and a head full of ideas.

i definitly want to become fully lingual in spanish and i ahve alot of friends in mexico so thats where i wanna go.

I have travelled and taken time off before. I went to university for 2 years took a year off and lived near cancun for 4 months and then came back home before starting school again. This time i had off gave me a perspective of life and how whats important in the US isnt important in other places.

Also it showed me the slower life and how easy it is to let life and the rat race ruin your life or just make it past faster.

After recently watching a documentry on the effects of stress on the human body i dont want to be stressed working a cubical i want to live somewhere maybe open a bar or hostel and chill

stress is a self imposed thing

it is a product of programming, just be stronger than they are.

stress is a natural reation to problems in society. Stress causes the release of endorphins like adrenaline. when things cause you to release these more than they should its a huge issue.

not soething you can control.

Anyways when you get stressed from work or from bullshit rat race life, your releasing these endorphins that cause you to have higher rates or heart disease and diabetes, etc.

Stress is supposed to result from life or death situations. not from homework or a movie or your job

I don't want it to seem like I'm a crass materialist. Money is just a symbolic representation of value. Making a lot of money means that what you do is valuable. Educated workers add more value to society and the world than uneducated ones. So by educating yourself you are making the world a better place.

And if you are interested in public policy and are going to a good school it sounds like you are capable of adding a lot of value to the world in that capacity.

The rewards of your hard work do not have to be spent on material consumption. Warren Buffet lives in a very modest house and plays bridge with Bill Gates for entertainment. And he's donating BILLIONS of dollars to charity.

One could say well Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard. Well yes he did, so yes anything is possible, thats not really the issue. The issue is what are the odds of that happening. And having a degree dramatically raises them in your favor.

An undergraduate degree is not for specialization. It's to teach people to think, read, and write. Graduate degrees are for specialization.

But it sounds like you just wanted a cosigner on a decision you'd already arrived at. Am I off base?

i havent made any decision, im just saying why i want to do that. i appreciate everyones opinions, and luckily i have until august to figure out what im going to do.

Im def not staying in atl, and that means whereever i go (cali or NM or colorado) i have to have lived there for a year to get residency.

I figure either way i have to take a year off.

Well good luck whatever you decide. You'll be successful and it's great to be young and have so many exciting options.

First, you are actually able to save money while going to school - pretty good in this age of education debts.

Second, you have already clued into how Bureaucratic the world of white collars can be. If you think the teaching world is narrow, wait until you hit the public policy world.

You might want to take a look at a new book called:

"Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work," motorcycle-repair shop owner and Ph.D. Matthew Crawford attempts to speak up for the honor of the manual trades and spirit of self-reliance that come with them. Crawford, who once headed a think tank in Washington argues that "a lot of people, including some who are very smart, would rather be learning to build things or fix things."
"The irony is that I got that [office] job because I had a master's degree. And, so, I thought I had to use it and wear a tie and become a knowledge worker."- Matthew Crawford, author
(the above from the PBS website)

He found his office work to be dull, mind numbing and not at all fulfilling.

I took several multi-year breaks on my way to getting multiple degrees so it doesn't have to necessarily mean not finishing. If you find out you want to return to school then you will be much more focused and motivated and studying will not be harder, if anything it will be easier.

And while I can appreciate those that say a break can easily derail your education, one must also appreciate that as you continue your education and get involved with girls, marriages, babies and possible education debts, that these "responsibilities" can easily channel you into a rut and derail your real life.

I'd vote for taking some time and checking out the opportunities that the real world might offer.

If nothing else, finish school so you can have as much sex with as many random people as possible. After college, sex is harder to come by with multiple partners.

The three somes, the firm young bodies. A beach in Mexico has all that too, but college chicks just can't get enough.

Getting a good education is worth it, take it from me. I am a dumb college drop out that is now a construction worker. I own my own business and have since gone back to college for business classes. It is much harder going back to college, and own your own business, and possible raise a family. (wife might be pregnant) Don't get me wrong, I make good money and am happy with everything in my life, however, life could be easier with a better education. Happy Farming.

so im currently tied up until about august with a lease and stuff, but im just trying to decide what i want to do after that.

Im enrolled in university with a B average. made deans list last semester and am on track to do it agian, but i dont know if i wanna spend all my early twenties in college. I took a year off already and i have about 2 years left, but i really want to go live in the caribean for a little while. Prob mexico because i lived there for 4 months a few years ago.

anyways. Besides school, i have about 10k saved, prob 15 or 20 by next aug. Should i just live life and worry about school later, or just finish it up and keep saving for my business i want to open?

either that or i could always move to cali haha

Dude finish school. Trust me I travel for work and with out a degree your chances at making a good living is limited. your 20's are cool but so are 30's expecially if you are doing something you enjoy. Peace

Take it from an old guy. Just follow your passion. You have but one life to live and make the most of it. Only you should make your decisions, if you love what you are doing keep doing it, if you don't, find something else to do. School is overrated ...unless you plan to work for someone else the rest of your life or be a doctor or lawyer. If you are doing what you love you should have no regrets.

Finish school, the harder you work sooner you are done. You can be finished in 3 years. Or even less if you go full year. Another perk is that Universities have study abroad programs where you get credit, and get to go places dirt cheap. I am sad I never took advantage of this but since here is your chance do it.

damn dood, you sound just like me in my first couple years of college. all i wanted to do was experience life somewhere else, but in the end i decided to stay so i can finish and make my money along the way...retire young and THEN go live in the carribean or any place in the world once i have enough residual income to support my worldwide man of mystery lifestyle

whether you stay or you go, the amount of hard work you put in will determine how much you can go for. personally i would rather get the hard work out of the way before i am 30 and then spend the rest of my life livin' it up!! :woohoo:

you need a VACATION!!

i hate the rat race too man, always running around trying to make a dollar, sit in traffic here, wait in line here, etc etc its bullshit man i feel you.

moving to cali wont change anything man, shits not all pretty and paradiso like some people think. cali is more caught up in the rat race than most states. people out here are shady and desperate just like everyone else.

i was getting sick of all the BS so i took a nice couple day camping trip into the forest, got drunk smoked dank and shot all my guns off. came back home and got back in it.

im gearing up for another vacation because i gotta get outta here too. take a nice week long trip to the caribean, refresh, then come back and get back into the hustle! i would love to hit up latin america right now, just chill get drunk, eat, go swimming, chill on the beach, live the slow life.

I live in Mex and it is not cheap. It would take about 10 grand just to get the paperwork to live here. Unless you do not really want to be free and have to go to a border to get a tourist card every 6 months. Forget the degree just learn. now you are going into upper div work design work in classes you are interested in. Study in Guadalajara for a semester to see if you really like it down here. Even if you really wanted to come down it would take some time just to plan it right. We do not want bums down here. And after sitting on a nice beach for 6 months it gets old. Thinking about coming down here with 10 g's to open a b and b is laughable. I have over 10 g's in my palapa on the beach. Palm fronds are not cheap even if you gather them yourselves.
I would stay in school and go places on your breaks. You talk about wanting to live your life freely and possible do things later. Well you run across a woman, get a little sick, have a family,or business there goes your freedom. It is hard to go back to school when you do not have the time. It's easier now because you have no money. Once you have had money you get accustom to a way of life. Going back to school after you left makes it hard to live on nothing and study till midnight.
The world will still be there in 2 years. Just start putting away for things to live here if that's what you want. Buy a 4x4,surfboards, diving equipment, jetskies, seed collection, fishing equipment, pangas, ice chests, etc etc. I know you do like material things, but hey you're not borrowing my shit and unless you plan on just meditating on the beach you better bring your own toys to the sandbox.JK

of course the money i have right now wouldnt be enough, but it would be enogh to leave the country for a few years at least. The alternate plan would be to stay here longe nough to get the cash to do that.

On a lighter note, GOOOOOO CHIVAS!!! que bueno
