You KNOW that people are going to be walking around red eyed and hungry in the 'dam. So, anyone have some hardcore suggestions for GOOD food out there? I'm into anything: Italian, Sushi, good Steak place...whatever. Just interested in hearing the scoop from REAL people possibly with links to some good spots to eat. Don't really want to hit dives/greasy spoon joints....etc.

Any suggestions are welcome.

The green planet is a great vegi restaurant(close to dam square) and i believe it is called the Bols hoed*sp is also a very good restaurant with big servings.
The golden temple down the street from Dutch passion is another for a good vegetarian meal, they also are one of the few places in europe that sell rootbeer.

doner kababs, chicken or lamb, 1.95 euro, on the freshest baked bread, they make it there and you can see it, leemans doner shop, van woustraat at the tolstraat stop on the #4 tram. walk back 100 meters on the west side of the street, delicious and addictive

Loads of steak places right across from the main grasshopper, massive chip bar built into the wall aswell, nice pizza place on the corner, can't remember what its called but its a chain so they're probably everywhere, this is also on the same bit as the steak houses.

Had are bad experience in 1 of them steak houses on my b-day about 2 years ago, long story short im lucky to not be in jail doin life over there, don't let it put ya off though.

Damn Trichomefarmer, I haven't thought about green planet in ages!

That place is awesome. My girl and I ordered a boatload of food while we were there.......so much so that the cook came out and asked if we really wanted that much food....it was great and we ate almost all of it. With my girl being a vegetarian, it was a major hit as well..

Be safe

Best steaks are De Poort at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 176-180 and Cafe Loetje near the Van Gogh Museum Johannes Vermeerstraat 52.

THE TACO SHOP, the owner is from California. HACHIS

I agree! The Taco Shop (located where the Tolstraat meets the Amstel) is about the best mex available in Amsterdam. Heel Lekker! :) One Love.

if you live in the states you will not be happy with any of the steak houses in the dam. argentinian beef, grass fed only. probably healthier, but otherwise it will be the worst steak you ever had for a lot of money. not crazy about dutch food either, bland and starchy except breakfasts are good. after many trips to this city i finally settled on chinese. seems to be universally good? there are 2 very good joints across the street from each other right as you cross one of those bridges into the red light district. recommended.

I remember staying in the Golden Tulip which was a block away from the Grasshopper, cant remember if its the original or the second, but they was a ridiculous sushi place right in the area, near a church of some sort. Memories from 4 years ago are a bit fuzzy when not recalled on regularly. At any rate I am going back during the xmas and new years holiday and you can bet your spliff I will be searching for that place. The Gyros the other poster was referring to I believe are to be known as a Brooj Shorma, cant remember how to spell it, but these this are hard to resist, you have to try them, they are everywhere. I ate some breakfast at Barneys too, out of this world waffles and such. Enjoy your trip. I know I will be, 2 months away!! Cheers.

Must try Rijstafel. Best with more than two people, but some places will even set up One person....

For Indonesian, there are a few choices. Some are pricey and a bit fancy, but excellent, just the same.

Casual Indo - BOJO is very good, if the gruff male waiter is not in attendance....

Falafel, Wok to Wok (quick and easy - healthy, a bit salty), and as posted by REZ, Foodism near Grey Area is a good place for a sammich.

Thai & Indian some good choices, as well.. Cannot go wrong with the Ethnic foods, it's what I eat in NorCal Cities anyways...lol....

taco shop mmm to bad they Nuke there food :badday:

Buger Bar has the 10 euro burger 100% wagu beef

Do you mean Burger Bar or Buger Bar??

Yes they do use some microwaves at the Taco Shop but then again it is Amsterdam!! The owner is from California so the flavor makes up for it.

I also love the Burger Bar, The Kobe Beef Burger is the one to get there, just make sure to ask for no sauce and have them give it to you on the side.

If you like a quick, relatively healthy snack to put the kibosh on the munchies, try the Maoz felafel shops. There's one in the Leidesplein area and a neat one down near the Albert Cuyt market.
