I didnt want to pipe in but let me share

my dad hung himself

my first cousin (dad's brother's son) jumped off a bridge (omitting names to protect innocent) in NYC

my first cousin (dad's brother's son) overdosed on pill's in front of his mother

my great uncle shot himself

so did one of my best friends

I know what goes on in the head of the morbidly depressed, i am exactly like them except that they were treated with conventional psych meds and i abandoned the zyprexa depakote effexor xanax cocktail for weed

pot means so so so much more to me, as much as a cancer patient

and on top of it has healed me enough to believe in hope and to be safe and free enough to love again

if only my medicine didn't make me a fucking criminal

but after all these years im learning to be grateful nonetheless

please let me answer the posters initial question

yeah it selfish, mind you tho that is the paradox

at that point your so depressed you cant feel others its just you, absolute mental solitude.

if you could feel empathy for others, or could be receptive enough to be cognitive of their grief yu wouldnt as likey kill yourself

but i look at life like it is a book once its written that's it

and its such a shitty ending

guess it didn't work out so well for them ;)

I don't get it, no civilization will endure forever. Right or Wrong.

I mean, even in anti-suicide societies, you're going to die, and the civilization I'm talking about was raped and pillaged and killed by a catholic anti-suicide extremist religion that still exists today.
so that brings up a question, would you rather be tortured to death(killed because you refused to change everything you believed in) by a society with beliefs different than yours or take your own life with some dignity?

This thread killed my buzz completely. Damn it. Anyway no I don't think so.

Cancer patients tend to want to die instead of spending years of agony kept on life-support; is that selfish? Yes suicides happen for stupid reasons. I remember one man who jumped from Golden Gate Bridge without any hint or explanation, except a note in his pocket reading "no reason except I've got a toothache." Well, it was his life to throw away, his right, but incredibly selfish when considering those left behind if actually there was anybody.

Labeling everybody the same way is stupid. Depression patients or others after trauma can suicide as means of pain relief without any other escape in sight. Extreme, yes, but it happens so I guess the pain they feel is extreme also.

Then again maybe it was some seriously bad toothache.

lighten up, just joking around. but in all seriousness, offing yourself is not conducive for passing on genetic or cultural traits. Claiming that this doesn't make sense because we all die eventually, doesn't make sense!

Here's a Q - why does mental illness have such a strong genetic link, and is so prevalent, if it makes one less likely to flourish and pass on genetic material? It seems to go against natural selection.

ok well is it selfish? i dont think so, cause for it to bad enough to just say fuck it i think there had to be problems & situations that were horrable, possably ones impossed by society or the people he encountered, and i think the people who are responsable for making them that way had to be selfcentered and selfish ,to make someone son, mother father, or daughter ect.... kill themself. the statment, you are your brothers keeper is true.

if you're crazy enough to kill yourself being selfish is not going to be your priority if you are at the point that you would prefer death over life then you're obviously suffering immensely with life. its your right to end your life whenever you want noone owes anyone anything and calling them selfish isnt going to help them get better anyways. also if they're already dead then you can call them whatever you want they're gone :) perhaps its us being selfish to demand that they need to stay alive in their suffering in order for us to gain however we do from them staying alive and suffering.

It's not selfish if you kill all your loved ones then kill yourself...that way you wont have to worry about them suffering when you do it.

My grandfather hung himself when my dad was 13, that's what happens when you marry Satan's Sister.

Having considered suicide myself, I'll say no the intent is not selfish. The intent is a relief from pain.

But aside from the intent, the action will cause suffering to others so in that sense it is selfish. Although I wouldn't use that word. I would call a suicidal person self absorbed, not selfish in the way that a narcissist is selfish.

hmmmm self absorbed..... hmmmmmmm

that's harsh

I didn't mean it to be harsh. That's just what my experience of being suicidally depressed was like.

Selfishness, in the way that word is conventionally used, has nothing to do with it. Although I can see how people would see it as selfish.
