Q:

just so i have a basic understanding of "correctly" harvesting, from what i hear is you hang the manicured buds upside down in a dark room for 1-2 days to dry out, with indirect airflow from a small fan or something. after this, do they go to brown bags (to remove excess moisture?) or do they go straight to mason/canning jars for curing?

You got the basic concept right. It should take longer than 1-2 days though, otherwise it's going to be way too harsh. I hang the whole plant for a week after I chop. Then separate the main branches, give them a rough trim, and hang them for 4-6 more days until the stems snap. Then the final trim and to the mason jars they go. Don't forget your pump-n-seal or similar product.

well is there any dice to the brown bag idea or is it basically...hang in dark until stems snap, then to jars to cure?

The brown bag technique is going to dry them a little faster, and make the nugs look tighter, but I'm kind of a quality control freak (if it wasn't evident) and I like to preserve every single trich as best I can. And as with any technique that speeds drying, if you use the brown bag tek quality of smoke will be reduced.

nice, thanks for the info!

i plan harvesting close to Sept. 5-20th, depending obviously on genetics i have...will wait till i finish the project to post up more pics. death in the family plus pure schedule im barely making it to keep the lights in cycle....as i have to alter the environment around it to accommodate its flowering schedule...pain in the ass! but i know when im sittin back smokin a bowl of it i'll be changing my tune quickly!

update...bad news (i think)...

i accidentally left my grow tent open last night, exposing the plants to a computer monitor and desk light. for like 8 hours.

i'm so mad at myself, i had a funeral which put me running on 2 hours of sleep the whole day, i layed down to watch a movie while my plants were being fanned...passed the fuck out. woke up with the tent open fucking screaming at myself..lol..

i don't know if i ruined this harvest, or if these plants are forgiving. i closed it up soon as i noticed, and the light cycle is coming on in 2 hours anyway.

some said i may be doomed, some said i may be okay as in nature plants are occasionally exposed to light outdoors, etc.

You're definitely not doomed. Just get them back on schedule and it'll be fine...they're hardy plants.

thanks guys! yeah thats what they've been saying only difference is they say check every day now on until harvest...check all around the buds, on top of them, at the nodes, etc. whatever you find snip off...

being im essentially at 40 days, i should only have 10 or 20 more days to go till chop, so hopefully nothing shows and if they do i catch them before seeds can be made/buds can be pollinated

Looks like things are going well.

I live in the Midwest and we have huge differences between winter and summer RH - winter being extremely dry and summer being extremely humid. RH has a huge effect on drying and curing. In the summer plants can hang for more than 1-week without air conditioning. In winter plants dry much quicker.

The paper bag method of drying seems like a good idea when you want to slow the drying process down a bit. By keeping the moister buds in the bag the RH in the bag is kept above the RH of the outside air and they dry slower. In the winter usually just let them dry for 2 days and stick them in the jars with the lids open for another few days before I start the sweating.

PS!

anyone who comes across this thread/post, on average - the strains im running - nirvana white rhino/widow, both primarily indicas, how many days of flower do they go, on average? 50? 55? 60? 65? i know you can never predict but i need to ballpark when i need to start flushing.

KMK0420

for an indica? wow are you sure? I thought most sativas go that long but rarely see indicas go that long

so check the strain guide or just google the flowering time on those. if anything says eight weeks tho let it go nine. i have done soil and hydro for many years and soil is always plus one week. those flowering times are in optimal conditions which hardly anyone can really do.

Also, how often are you watering? i might start flushing now if i week watering once a week. maybe wait a week if your watering more frequently than that.

btw, looking excellent
