hey boys, just like the title reads, tried to supercrop one of the colas and the stem just snapped straight in half. Is there something wrong in my technique as to why it didnt just bend but snapped straight in half? by the looks of the pic will i be alright? thanks

what should i do next time to ensure the stem doesnt snap

picture.php

also is it cool like this and should i leave it and let it repair on its own?

First: this happens all the time, no worries. Straighten her out and wrap a twist tie around the break and she should heal right up.

Next time make sure to crush the stem between thumb and forefinger, rotate grip 90º and crush again and then fold over.

yup just tape it up or use the twisty tie method that freezer boy told you.

Be sure the two parts of stem are touching really well and it will heal just fine.

That tip is gonna wilt something fierce and will stay that way for a little bit, it's normal, and should recover just fine.

i never heard of squeezing the stem first, so you recommend next time i almost pinch the stem before i attempt to bend it- like pinch it so the stem is almost crushed before i even try to bend it over?

maybe that was my mistake, i was always under the impression of crushing the stem while i was bending it. i guess crushing th stem with my fingers before even trying to bend it is the better way huh?

Not just the better way, it is kind of the essence of supercropping.
It is the crushing that makes it bend rather than the other way around...you'll get it, no worries!

damn i wish i would have known to crush the stem before bending it like 10 minutes ago lol. do you think it will be fine if it dont bandage it up and just let it hang like that?

no, the stem needs to be touching again. put it back up on top of itself and support it. Tape, twisty ties.

You MUST "reassemble" or the top will die. Look into the stalk and you'll see it's essentially a straw. Thats where the food travels up. Disconnected as it is, the food can't get to the top. Not quite the same but here's a stem that split wide open like a mail slot (lighter simply for scale purposes) I could've stuck my pinky all the way through.

Super cropping is super scary the first time (as you've seen for yourself) Crushing the stem sounds so severe but, some plants are like celery. Bending just wasn't part of their design specs. You want to make sure there's a double extra weak spot where you make the fold.

yeh i just propped it up right now, its already wilting really badly, i hope she makes it! also just for clarification next time i need to crush the stem first before i bend it over right? and by crushing i mean by like taking my thumb and index finger and squeeze the stem together as if im smushing each side together?

you don't really need to bend it over at all-just do the crushing thing and the shoot should fall over a bit-thats what you want

You're half right. Crush it twice. Crush between thumb and forefinger, rotate grip 90º and crush again.

Now that it's propped up, tear some toilet paper into thin strips, wrap it tightly around the wound until you have several layers then mist the tp lightly until it is wet all the way thru but not falling apart wet. It'll dry hard and strong and just fall off as the plant grows.

The end should live. If it gets too bad in the next couple of days just cut it off and let the next stem down grow. You've got a healthy, robust plant there and that little sprout will be big in no time.
