IP Addresses & getting busted

Whats up everyone at IC. I wanted to know how do growers get busted by tracing the IP. How does the police figure out who is needed to be investigated. For example, if I order a few supplies to my home, what are the chances of getting caught or arising suspicion. Does the grower already have to be "hot" or can someone get away with ordering a few supplies every now & then or even once. I always wondered how they catch people thru IP addresses. Thanks in advance to those who respond.

I believe the "busts" you are referring to from online sources come from LEO getting the shipping addresses from the postal service or whatever private service it may be from. Your IP address is uniquely identified to your computer but that would require the company you order through to log it and then willingly (or unwillingly) give it up to the authorities. They would then need to subpoena your ISP to see who was holding the address at the given time the server was accessed. The first option sounds a bit more likely than the latter.

Depends where you live buddy.

Customs can intercept a suspicious package, but wont get a warrant based on that (at least in democratic countries). It will just put some heat on you, so you have to watch your back. Same with IP-s. Not enough to get a warrant but enough to get the heat.

* the cops can also trace you without a warrant or anything like that...of course it wont be used against you, cause its illegal, but a friendly cop may show at your porch asking if he can look around your house becaus he is seeking a dangerous dog...and he will accidentaly find some weed.

Im in the US & I have a friend who is paranoid about having a couple lights sent to his house along with some nutes. I want to reassure our safety but since he will also be growing for personal use, I don't know if we are at a serious risk of getting caught.

not really that much to worry about...only lights and nutes...he could grow strawberries...but heres again the heat factor... if a cop shows up..."no warrant no discussion, over and out"

Cool I feel a bit more at ease. I also sugested he change his IP address after the order is placed. Dont know if it will help any but its worth a try. Yes Im definitely taking note on that no warrant no entry to any strange gas guys or police wanting to go in & look.

just keep the smell low..or better...NO SMELL. If you have to sell somethin be very careful. Try to use lots of fans to get rid of high temperatures in one room ( Ir cameras). Its a risky business...

.. a couple of quotes from an article on Wikipedia about computer surveillance

In the United States, under the Communications Assistance For Law Enforcement Act, all phone calls and broadband internet traffic (emails, web traffic, instant messaging, etc) are required to be available for unimpeded real-time monitoring by Federal law enforcement agencies.

automated Internet surveillance computers sift through the vast amount of intercepted internet traffic, and filter out and report to human investigators those bits of information which are "interesting" -- such as the use of certain words or phrases, visiting certain types of web sites, or communicating via email or chat with a certain individual or group. Billions of dollars per year are spent, by agencies such as the Information Awareness Office, NSA, and the FBI, to develop, purchase, implement, and operate systems such as Carnivore, NarusInsight, and ECHELON to intercept and analyze all of this data, and extract only the information which is useful to law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

I guess it just depends on how big a target you are.

I just wanted to add a slightly off topic point about following the money trail. The resources available for under covers, snitches, and doing hardcore surveillance on grow houses is significantly less than the resources for monitoring any and all activities that fall under the bullshit guise of "terrorism."

Being careful on the internet is serious business. You don't hear many busts happening from the net, but every bust that began from an "anonymous tip" you can draw your own conclusions from.

Once my personal grow is done hopefully Ill have enough primo buds to close up shop for a while. Damn, fuck the motherfuckin laws & the feds for making it so difficult for responsible adults to grow & smoke their own homegrown.

It would be my advice not to have the equipment shipped to where the grow will be. If you don't have to leave any paper trail why do it?

True Scopio, but there are no more addresses to use. I even used my own once when I got my first hps light. There doesn`t seem to be any more options. Maybe I should just quit after this one & just let him grow me a plant or two. Ive already made plenty mistakes.

Big difference between companies like BayTSP that are paid large amounts of money to scour the internet looking for new movie copyright infringement and an overblown sense of paranoia that ANY law enforcement agency that DOESNT have any JURISTICTION to enforce the law on the internet would waste manpower hours doing something they arent allowed to do in the first place. Sure they do it locally when it pays off locally for them. Not one of them is going to waste their time trying to bust people outside their juristiction.
