150w HPS Club and Resource Guide......

I use the cocotek bricks, mixed heavy with perlite.
Bio-Grow, Bio-Bloom, and top-max.

I supplement with epsom salts and whole milk when I feel I need a cal-mag boost.

You suppose I should be concerned with the lamp? I've never dealt with low wattage setups, and just wondered if maybe 150's are loud. I noticed someone earlier in the thread saying the same thing about the sun system.

Thanks for the info. Hehe, glad to see someone else using milk in there coco:rasta:

Don't worry about the sound it's fine, some apparently do that.

If sound is a concern with you stealth-wise, go digital.:2cents:

About the buzzy ballast complaint.

If you somehow reduced the noise of your ventilation below the sound of the ballast I would say you have a valid complaint. And then, like Cosmo said.. get a Digital ballast :]

I do have a question for the 150 club... has anyone else noticed that the sun 150 is louder than a 1kw ballast? What gives?
I'll be doing another reflective insulation wrap of the whole inside, so there will be 2 layers... should make it somewhat quiet when it's shut... but what the hell sun, thing is loud enough to put a dB rating on the side... lol

Beautiful bud, AdamH420. My ballast made a loud buzz. I moved the igniter away from the coil and the noise stopped. The igniter is the beige plastic can left of the x-former box. A couple of inches was all it took.

I NEED some help with respect to my vertical head room. If any of you have advice based off experience to offer, would you stop by thread? I would really appreciate it!

I got some nice looking places I think, but I don't know how much room I'll have left for BUD!

Hey Guys,
I just discovered this thread, been primarily an outdoors guy. I'm In the process of vegging some plants for a spring crop outdoors. I have been using cfl's and a t32 shop light. Plants are doing ok. I have them in a homemade cabinet, 2'x2'x3'. I bought a sun systems 150watt hps yesterday to see if I can increase their size before they go out. Question is "how close can I put the light to the tops of the plants. Started at about 18" and want some advice before I lower them.. by the way this is an amazing thread, I never knew you could grow plants like the ones shown here. Sorry for asking a basic question but this is a long thread. Good luck to everyone.

Can I move the ignitor away from the coil in a combined system like the sun 150? Will I need any extra supplies to do such a venture... or is it as easy as moving the thing over and taping it down?

Also, I got to thinking... I've only test fired the thing laying upside down on my floor, facing up... do you suppose having it upside down would cause any noise? I figured as long as it was horizontal it'd be fine.

Here's a shot of the lamp I got -

I know the lamp is louder than the 4" fantech centrifugal, it will dialed down to about 25%, and will have a duct muffler on the out. Currently just waiting on a speed controller to show up to do all the upgrades.

Looking good catman, I've got the same problem as you - head room. Currently 2 weeks into bloom and now I'm having to do some emergency lst. Got some small weights hanging right at the ends, which causes them to bend right over. Tried super-cropping 1 branch and it just bent straight back up the next day! Hopefully they're done stretching else the shits really gonna hit the fan. Some blue light in there during early flowering has slowed stretching IME.

Hey Guys,
Question is "how close can I put the light to the tops of the plants.

Hey old guy,
I have a 150hps (actually 2 150hps bulbs in one hood) and I get it to about 6-8" from the tops in flowering. I have a fan blowing just below the bulbs and I think this helps. Depending on ventilation you should have no problem getting them closer than 18". 12" should be no problem for sure. I have double the heat you have and I can easily get to 8", and I'm thinking you should be able to also. But so many variables, maybe drop a few inches each time for several times.
good luck and stay safe,
some other old guy!

Cosmo - I think I'll try and find some weights to use, thanks.

If your branch just popped back up, you didn't supercrop :] You literally have to break the stem so that it is damaged and it will have to heal.

I made a dual 150W in a bake-around cooltube from 2 security lights I got at a yard sale ($2 each). Total cost was about $20. I can get the tube within about 4" of the top of the canopy.

Thanks guys for the information. Reading this thread is giving me the ideal that I could grow a small crop here during the wintertime. After the end of April it's just too hot to grow in a cabinet in the garage. Much good work being done here, the more I read the more ideals I get! Keep it up.

hey catman, your setup is alot like my old one. my very first plant i didnt really know they stretch sooo much. if i were you i'd get nasty with them now while there still just begining to streatch. bend em over and tie your main cola to the top of the 2 liter bottle witha twisty tie. i have burnt tops before because they grow overnight and touch the light.

i'm vegging in a pc sometimes i have them in there a month. i couldnt do that without tieing them down. all my plants are tied 90" and the tops are tied to the top of the dixi cups there in. looks weird but when they go in to flower and streatch i still have my thick main top and alot of other tops they literally explode with budsites.

when you get good you can get them to grow pretty uniform, i usually top or cut the 2 branches that are at the top of the 90 bend and the lower branches catch up and it looks natural

That's a nice lamp. If you're gonna play with the igniter, check to see if the wire harness has a few inches of slack to play with. Don't touch anything inside unless the lamp is unplugged. If the lamp has a capacitor, it will still knock the you know what out of you, even unplugged. Just don't touch the leads.

There are several diy remote ballast/lamp threads, SugarbearII is one of the best imo. If that lamp was mine I'd yank the ballast and reassemble the hood just like it appears in the pic. This will reduce heat. It may also give you an option in relocating the igniter away from the coil. I put my igniter several inches away and outside the coil box (4 x 4 switch box.) The buzz went away.

Come to think of it; magnets, like speakers, TVs, etc. will make a coil buzz. Get that thing away from speakers/magnets!

catman, just don't cut the tops out of the plants. this might be ok if you wanted to veg another week or two but you're nine days in. lookin good.

Figured i'd stop in and show a little bit of my first 150w harvest.
Did two plants under the 150w sun and ended up with like 27 grams.
I was aiming for two ounces so I didn't quite make it to my goal but it was some good smoke:canabis: which is why I also don't have any dry pictures lol

This was what I got off my biggest plant
