Freaking nazi sponsorship companies! The company I work for sponsors snowboarders, dirtbikers, parasailers, you name it; and when they're caught hitting the bong, it's normally because my boss (company owner) and I are there packing the bowls.

How many people have been forced to apologize to keep their lives, families, and jobs? Phelps is no different. He just has to do it in the court of public opinion instead of a court of law.

Lets see Phelps drops us like a hot potato, regrets his actions which is being photographed with a bong to his yap. States he's made an error in judgement & will never do it again. Why he's shitting on Cannabis for his own financial gain. Fuck that selfish drunk. I'm not big on fruit loops anyways but really this guy don't give a shit about US.

Maybe not ... or maybe not now. Who knows? I'm not going to say that Phelps is all of the sudden going to become stoner numero uno. He can't. But the idea that smoking weed on his own time in the off-season was the worst thing he could do? Sorry. It makes him no different than anyone else.

Just because someone isn't our our supporter now, doesn't mean we can't be open to the possibility. And it certainly can't mean we are prohibited from being supportive of them in some shape or form, or we will never have a chance for any sort of mutual understanding or cooperation.

And even if he never does support us, we are at least fighting the idea that marijuana is such a damaging thing. A positive perception for marijuana is vital to any legalization efforts.

well i would consider boycotting if he was an activist, or did ANYTHING good for the MJ community...he doesnt, so why should we care?

it would be different if gypsy just lost his nike sponsor (for lack of a better analogy)

If gypsy lost his nike sponsorship, I'm sure we would all be up in arms without me saying anything. :p But in reality Phelps is stuck in the same position as so many marijuana smokers, either having to be embarrassed and apologize, lose their jobs (sponsors, competitions), or more.

I know he isn't an activist, but people are laying it on him way more than he deserves. Weed is not that big of a deal. Why not try to create a better atmosphere for all smokers instead of just the activists?

If ONLY Phelp's would have felt the way you do!!You rite,no big deal at all.....so why LIE?You keep talking like he HAD to say these things, like we all have to lie and say these things to live, wrong. He could have said differently,he could have helped the face of weed, instead he chose to denounce it to fatten his wallet(or lessen the hurt).
What I or anyone else puts in there bodies or does after work is nobodies business, especially NOT the governments.I have never had to lie about smoking, never been ashamed of smoking, dont defend a fucking millionaire punk who COULD have said differently, especially since he is worth 100 mill even without kellogs..........I would have thought more of him if this went down.
"Why YES,that is me with the bong, would you like a shot of me with the bong and my 8 gold medals"

Asking him to defend that would be asking him to give up his way of life and his passion: swimming. (Remember all those gold medals? I can't imagine how much work went into that.) It isn't fair at all to as him to give all of that up. Maybe you are willing to make that sacrifice, but he or anyone else shouldn't have to just for hitting a bong. It isn't about Phelps. It's about weed.

And yeah, I would have thought more of him too. But I'm not going to just say screw him because he didn't give up everything for me. But you know what, you and I can help change the face of the conversation. You and I can give him some room to say weed is no big deal.

But we won't be giving anyone that room so long as we dump everyone who doesn't do exactly what we want them to do.

Michael Phelps Smokes Weed?

Is Michael Phelps a pot smoker? Given Michael Phelps history with alcohol abuse, it's a fair question to ask. Back in 2004, the then-19-year old swimmer was sentenced to 18 months probation after pleading guilty to drunken driving. In exchange for his guilty plea of driving while intoxicated, all charges were dropped (they included driving under the influence, underage drinking and failure to stop at a stop sign - all very serious charges indeed).

Before a packed courtroom, Phelps made the following conciliatory statement: "I recognize the seriousness of this mistake. I've learned from this mistake and will continue learning from this mistake for the rest of my life." The terms of his probation included giving anti-drug speeches to students, which, given his stature as a high-profile athlete (and, by extension, a role model for kids) was entirely appropriate.

Michael Phelps Caught Smoking Bong: What if?

That Michael Phelps may be a pot smoker raises a host of questions. Thus far, Michael Phelps has not responded to the allegations, but for the sake of argument, let's suppose Michael Phelps does smoke weed. While some may not consider it to be a big deal, if it's true then it can most definitely turn out to be a big deal for Michael Phelps. Why? Because since his DUI charge, Michael Phelps has cultivated a very wholesome image and is a role model to youngsters all over the world. Thus, if the allegations of pot smoking and partying turn out to be true, not only will he disappoint most of his fans, but he may also lose his lucrative role as a pitchman for various products. In short, it could cost him a lot.

Those dreams seemed the last thing on his mind when he puffed from the bong during two days of partying with students last November, a quiet time in the swimming calendar when athletes would not expect to get tested for drugs.

One party-goer who witnessed the star’s behaviour told the News of the World: “He was out of control from the moment he got there
.

“If he continues to party like that I’d be amazed if he ever won any more medals again.”

Phelps’ aides went into a panic over our story and offered us a raft of extraordinary incentives not to run the bong picture.

It was on November 6, weeks after his Beijing triumph, that 23-year-old Phelps surprised students at the University Of South Carolina in Columbia by showing up unannounced at a house party.

He was visiting Jordan Matthews, a girl he was secretly seeing who was a student there.

Our source revealed: “Michael came to visit Jordan but ended up just getting wasted every night.

“He arrived with a group of girls hanging all over him. Jaws hit the floor when he walked in. You don’t get many celebrities in Columbia, so when Phelps comes to your party it’s a very big deal.

“He didn’t know many people so you’d think he’d be a little shy. But he was loud, obnoxious and slamming beers from the get-go.

“Every girl wanted a piece of him and every guy wanted to be his best buddy. He couldn’t get enough of all the attention.”

As he basked in his hero status, Phelps knocked back beers and shots of spirits. And when a student offered him the glass bong engraved with red writing, he did not hesitate, says our source.

The 6ft 4ins athlete, in a white T-shirt and navy cap worn back to front, clasped the device in his huge hands and inhaled deeply.

Our source said: “You could tell Michael had smoked before. He grabbed the bong and a lighter and knew exactly what to do.

He looked just as natural with a bong in his hands as he does swimming in the pool. He was the gold medal winner of bong hits. Michael ended up getting a little paranoid, though, because before too long he looked like he was nervous and ran out of the place.”

And what pray tell fits into YOUR definition of a "real sport"???

Does it involve a bunch of coked-out steroid monsters in plastic armour smashing each other into the turf over a bag of inflated pigskin?

Or does it involve a different bunch of pongoid knuckledraggers skating after a wee black puck?

You really show your true colours with asshat donkeyhonker comments like that, Tree.....
