This method worked wonders for me.
This is my first time cloning so be gentle. Any tips are appreciated!
Here's the ingredients:
I couldn't make it over to the dollar store unfortunately.
3 tubs. 1 white. 2 black. $2.00 a piece
1 bag of perlite ~$3.75
2 packages of wicks at $2.00 a piece
$13.75 total. Close enough to the $10.00 mark to make me happy
Trimmed up the white box as recommended:
Drilled the holes and cleaned off the tub:
Put the wicks through that were cut in half:
The wicks soaked up the water pretty quick and the perlite was damp within an hour or so. Then then clones found their happy homes inside.
Attached a clamp lamp and voila:
They are still looking very happy after some time in the cloner. Here's a peak inside while lifting the lid to give 'em some air:
Since this is my first time cloning, I wanted to experiment with lengths, thicknesses and nodes when cloning. In addition, I wanted to test out this new cloner so I put them in many different spots to see how they did.
All in all there's about 25-30 clones in there trying to spread their wings and fly.
We'll see what happens!

I have had pretty good luck with Rootone, but I am always looking for new things to try. Giving this build a shot. Thanks for the info.

There was someone else in this thread that mentioned using rolled up shirts, however that was after a failure using cotton tiki torch wicks. So, maybe cotton + this method isn't the greatest. I'm not sure though.
The tiki torch wicks that I used were not cotton and they are working splendidly.
I had to go to a couple stores before I found some at Home Depot.
In regards to how deep you should make it, that's up to you. A couple of inches should do. You want the medium to go to the tops of your wicks (or replacement wicks).

I lost a couple of clones pretty early but they were super small cuts. Did you end up finding replacements for tiki-torch wicks? If not: my fiancee gave me a great idea when I was showing her the cloner:
Some of the leaves have yellowed a bit but the stems are still strong. I've been afraid to take 'em out of the perlite too much. However, when I checked one of the bigger clones at day 7, I could start to see where the roots were forming.
I'm at day 10 now and some of the clones are looking like they aren't going to make it. Most of them still look good though. It's my first try so I'd be happy if one makes it, to be honest. Besides, I've got a couple of beans going right now as backup.

It may sound a bit far-fetched, but it might be worth a shot. Who knows?

I cut a bunch of different heights, lengths and locations since it was my first time cloning. Two of my clones are regular looking cuts including the tips of the plants and a few leaves. A lot of them, however, are simply stems with leaves and an extra node beneath the surface. Some are just one leaf and a stem. That picture doesn't show all the clones.
I did this because I couldn't find a clear definition of what could and couldn't be cloned. So far, some of the ones that are simply a couple of leaves with a stem, are still doing okay. The ones with shorter stems and less leaves: not as well. One of the one-stem, one-leafers is still there, another isn't. I've had some interesting results for sure.
As I understood it, you should (technically) be able to clone virtually any part of the plant, regardless of the size of the cut.
I also knew that I would be able to get clones again, so I wasn't too concerned that absolutely every cut was the best possible cut. I wanted a couple I knew would go, and the rest for experimentation.
We'll see how the experiment turns out.

it was hard but i got a few packs luckily!!! Sending positive vibes your way for strong and healthy roots!!!! I really hope these take, i need'em to rock and roll for me, i'm almost totally dry.

so in summation i had great success with this cloner and virtually paid no attention to the cuts, i had killer roots in 6 days on some, 9 on the remainder and few went to 11 days. Only lost 2 cuts out of 18 or so, and i also noticed that the rooted clones literally exploded once they got into the moonshine mix and are off running FAST!
i kept the cloner in a dome for the few days, with the vents open, then started taking the dome off for 4-5hr segments, and sprayed with water maybe once a day if that. Changed the water out after 5 days 2 times and it was a cake walk. Building a new wick one now that will be more permament vs the ghetto duct-tape one i just used.
