I just bought some black treacle, which is the european equivalent of molasses. I note it contains SO2 - ie sulphur dioxide. Is that a problem?

It's likely there as a preservative. That product is made for human consumption and based on that, I think it should be fine. You be the judge... take a glance at these links:

Chitownstoner - Not sure what makes blackwheat honey different, but I've read that people have used honey, corn syrup, rice syrup and even raw cane sugar. I'd stick with what's been documented and proven. Why not try it out and let us know?

master shake - I've never used molasses to lower pH. (When I have to, I use potassium carbonate.) I feel if it was useful to lower pH the 3LB would probably have mentioned it.

My question is, is Grandma's Molasses black strap type?
I have found that actual black strap molasses is hard to find on a grocery shelf.

If not, it is wasting time to use it.

you should easily find blackstrap on the shelf at most health-food stores (and/or feed stores, depending on your location.) stores like Whole Foods, Lazy Acres, etc. i know trader joes does not carry it. i use plantation

Molasses is ok. Black strap grade molasses is good.

High fructose corn syrup is better.

Its a cleaner, purer source of energy. Cheaper too.

Not organic, but chemical. "Corn syrup" alone is a natural product, however.

I have used mollasses in my worm casting tea and foliar and it is working quite well!

Maybe some hints on using molases with compost and or guano tea=

Hopefully they'll all be professional growers and have a nifty PH meter buckled onto their leather belt ready to raise 'er up or bring 'er down!

So what is the 'PH' of molasses? Does anyone know? Is it relevant? Should I be checking my run-off?

I always use both together as a foliar spray.

If you want to use Maxicrop (seaweed extract) then add 1 tablespoon to a gallon of water and add 1/2 teaspoon of molasses to the same gallon of water.

This mixture provides a good defense against powdery mildew as well as mites. Apply as often as desired and try to hit the branches, stalk and the underside of the leaves.

If you can try and buy your molasses at a feed store or a farm supply store. It's really cheap - as in $10.00 for 3.5 gallons.
