Williams Wonder x Semango grow in coco/grow bags

Hey. This is my first time posting any kind of grow log here so bear with me. Also my first time having started from seed myself, the last two grows I attempted used clones from two different sources and I learned two painful lessons in putting too much light in too small a space, all kinds of problems there but it was worth the experience because I've been doing things a lot different (read better and more successful so far) as a result.
So after killing about 8 clones two weeks from the conclusion of flower my mentor in this got a little pissed off and told me to try it again, and not fuck it up. Part of the problem the last time was I was acquiring equipment and experience as I went and so timing became an issue.
I wanted to give it another shot so while smoking some Willies he accidentally crossed with Semango I grabbed a few seeds and set them aside. I have a spare closet around here that was looking like it needed a CFL in a metal drop light hood from home depot (I'm not going to bother with that photo, I think you get the idea) and some rapid rooters in it. So I dropped some seeds in a cup of water, and left them in my then dark grow room until I started seeing tap roots. As the seeds popped I put them in Rapid Rooters (awesome lil things they are) a little below the surface (I learned here that you don't want to bury the things but also keep them away from the immediate surface of the plug) that I prepped with RO water per the instructions. I'm using a Stealth RO filter that I have plumbed in to my shower head via a valve with a garden hose hookup I installed to make things easier. My main grow area is a room I constructed adjacent to my bathroom for convenience. My seedlings however, as I mentioned, are in a closet elsewhere. I kept the lil guys under a 24 hour on CFL for a little over a week (estimate, I forget exactly how long. I waited for some progress to put up this post because I didnt want it to end six days in with an OUCH) until they had about an inch of root protruding from the rooters.
I bought two bags of Atami b'Cuzz coco and soaked it for 24 hours in RO water mixed with some GH micro and Bloom, at a low concentration. My buddy has a chart posted somewhere else on ICMAG, 11908Feeding,gif or.jpg, it is in another thread, but thats the nute schedule I'm working with now and I'm happy with it.
I decided to use 2.5 gal grow bags after reading another thread and being impressed with what I saw and the convenience and cheapness make me happy.
Transplanted 7 seedlings in to the bags and put them on 20 hours on 4 hours off under a 400 watt MH lamp in my grow room. I have a separate air cooled hood with a 1000 watt Hortilux eye and another 500 watt cheapo sodium light I have on the side (not using this one unless I have to though I think its overkill) I'm planning on using for flowering these and at that point I'm planning on moving the MH light in to the closet my seedlings were in and keeping one or two of these babies in veg and cloning the christ out of them for a bit. My room can accomodate about 40 plants and you better believe I plan on filling it.
After the first two weeks I scaled my light cycle back to 18-6 and that is where I've kept it. I run the light at night because I already have entirely too much of a power bill from my central air and its not fun running essentially a 400 watt heater all day in 90 degree heat.
Sooo...according to my feed chart and my nonexistent memory I've had the babies under the MH for about three weeks (believe I'm at day 23) and here are some pictures of what is going on. I'm pretty happy I haven't had any problems so far and I can't wait to start trying my hand at cloning. I have a bubbler I built that I am dying to try out, and some surplus coco, and some more rapid rooters so I plan on trying damn near every method under the sun for the experience. All in all even when I fucked up the last crop I was so close to harvest any way that I had a nice big salad bowl of Chemdog that got me plenty stoned for over a month and I love to cook so I made my chick a lovely birthday cake with some cannabutter I used the last 1.5 oz of leaf for :) tasty! I'm an ag major and I get such a kick out of watching these lil guys blow up a lil more every hour. The last time I spent so much time in my bathroom I think I was sixteen hiding in it with a porno HA HA HA. I think I have it down this time though so let's see how this all turns out.
Now for some pics!!!:woohoo:

some bigger babies a lil later along

some bigger babies a lil later along

as far as nutes go I'm using GH stuff. micro, bloom and a lil koolbloom from time to time. if i can find a link to the chart i'm using i'll cross post it sometime. oh yes i do have a ph/tds meter, and i use it. sometimes. i find that my ro water has a good ph pretty consistently and very rarely do i need a drop or any ph down at all. lucky me. i pay attention to my tds and if i see any magnesium praying i have a spray bottle of an epsom salt/ro blend at hand. but again, no need things are going a ok with this schedule so far. i think i'm in the neighborhood of 500 ppm nutes now last time I checked although I just dropped my concentration a bit, my mentor told me to pull out the micro right now and just feed about 22ml of bloom to my 5gal of ro water for the next week or so. at the time these pics were taken, i'm using micro, bloom and a lil touch of koolbloom. switched to the straight bloom formula yesterday. that is a water heater drain pan i have the bags in on top of some bins i had lying around to catch my run off. cheap and effective i think it was 11 bucks at home depot. i want to construct a pvc frame and get some dutch leach trays and put together a fancy drip system eventually but first i'm trying to get my method dialed. that shit ain't free, for sure. and i'm already up to my eyeballs in lamps and mylar and water filters and freakin chemistry...oh boy.

and here are some shots from yesterday. my babies are growing up!!!

its hard to believe they were lil runts in rapid rooters just a couple of weeks ago. one of these (the super tall mutant) isnt the willies x semango, its a bagseed from some BC i got from a kid down the street when i wanted some smoke fast and on the cheap.
sooo...i look forward to posting some victory shots with some nice big buds and some other shots loaded with the 8000 million clones i want to take as soon as i continue to not fuck up this grow. cross your fingers for me and be safe. more updates as i keep going with this project are sure to follow.
peace!
oh yeah
my plan for my spent coco. i have a ton of spent coco lurking in my spare room and i'm going to have more. bulk mushroom substrate? i think so. monotub time next...muhahahaha!
and remember...
love life and let it love you back!

thanks!

thanks! i'm feeling good about things too... about to water in an hour or so. i'm using just GH bloom and my RO water this week. watching these babies grow is just great. i'm chomping at the bit to start getting the hang of cloning and really filling up my space.

still looking good!

still looking good!

The plants are still looking great and my lights are still the same, metal halide on 18-6. Feeding 2 gallons RO water/9ml Bloom/7ml KoolBloom every other day. I hand water with a little squirt bottle, half the nutes an hour or two in, then i wait until a few more hours in and water the remainder. I was watering about half of that volume before and once per day but this week when I added the KoolBloom to the mix again I started with the 2x per day. I am going to be doubling my concentrations when I switch to flower and I figure this will get them used to having some more phosphates around without shocking them quite so much and also as they are getting bigger they seem more 'thirsty' and I'm giving my babies what they need!
Popped 60 seeds of some average mid stuff from way back in a cup of RO water today, going to prep some more space to start them in rapid rooters and try vegging them under CFLs in the rest of my space. Maybe moving the MH light in my other space when I go to flower in this room but I want to see what I can do with CFLs, I have plenty more seeds of this strain to play with... I just figured those 7 look so lonely and that other light shouldnt be on the floor when these other babies are going so nicely!!
I need to score a lot more coco in the next week or two, time to start stockpiling. I think I want to try my hand at cloning in the next couple of days and fire up the bubbler. I'll keep on posting! Any suggestions on topping, et al? I'm all ears and I know, I know I'm going to go type 'topping' in the forum search now and read up myself, I meant to solicit some additional personal experience with that not be lazy! I'm a very happy person today!
:woohoo:

more ladies on the way...

more ladies on the way...

i like how the girls are doing, but in a week or so i want to start flowering. I think the 450 halide light needs to go somewhere else now, and its time to break out the 1000 watt Hortilux HPS to see if that gets them blowing up a bit before I put them on 12 12 to flower. The bagseed 'runt' is almost 20" tall, very fast grower. I like it a lot already. Problem is, no more seeds from that bag :(
I want to learn how to clone and I have this bubbler I built sitting in another closet and a jar of Rootech gel on my shelf...so I took the bottom two fan leaves off the bagseed beast and under RO water, cut a 45 degree angle, roughed up the 1/4 in about the area i made the cut at, stuck it in some rooting gel (on a card not in the tub, don't want to contaminate a whole tub of expensive gel) and popped in to my bubble cloner leaving a small space between the tip of the cutting and the bubbling RO water below. I used even less gel than I set aside, one of these tubs can last fo r e v e r. I'm going to try directly rooting them in lil pots of coco next.
Also I took one cutting off one of the willies x semango babies and put it in the bubbler too. She seats 14 but as you can see in the pics I set the tray of seedlings on the other half, I am not taking 14 cuttings off of my babies at one shot until I prove my method to myself with these guys. I need those lil girls to shine! I just came across another thousand or so seeds of the cross plants anyway.
Which explains the tray of rapid rooters on top of the bubbler. 27 strong starting seeds are in those plugs. There are a few sites where I ran out of plugs and just packed some atami coco in there that i washed with RO water, we'll see how that works out for me too. And I have more seeds poppin' in my other closet, should have another 7 rooters filled in the next couple of days. I want to pack that tray. The MH light is going to be in another closet for veg for some more plants while I flower out what is in the larger area. The closet with the seedlings is getting loaded up with another few CFLs to kind of pre veg things once I get them going. My goal is some kind of perpetuity here and I'm determined to get there :woohoo:
sorry not more close up shots of the ladies, my HPS ballast has some kind of wicked radiation issue and it made my camera get funny once it warmed up. I hope that doesn't become a problem...sun systems ballast? harvest pro elite. anyone else have that problem? I've ran this ballast before, dont think it's defective.
And yes I have an air cooled hood in there with a lens. I need to go buy a blower this week. Also there is HVAC in that room so I am not worried so much...keep it cranked and put an air mover in and I'm good.

the ladies themselves

the ladies themselves

are right here. Before the HPS warmed up enough to effectively EMP my camera. haha
that last shot is kind of unnecessary it is just the mh lamp cold on the floor.
that bubbler, if you want to know, is just a sterilite tub that I drilled a bunch of holes in the top of with two 18 inch air stones in it hooked up to some cheap aquarium pumps. I spraypainted the outside black for lightproofing (just buy an opaque one if you can and wrap it with tape like everyone else in the world and save yourself the hassle, trust me), and I set my cuttings in the neoprene collars for an EZ cloner, which you can buy at a hydro store for about .35 each. I found all that info in the ICMag forums and so can you, but here it is again boiled down for convenience. Simple and I'm told effective, I'll let you all know how I fare with it. Also bear in mind I haven't cloned a thing in my life so if it doesn't work for me, that is probably because i fucked up somewhere along the line. Anyone who wants to correct my technique is welcome to because I want to avoid fucking things up too egregiously here. Hence doing three different things at once. At least if one goes to hell the other two have a chance...
be safe and regards to all

I couldn't help myself I had to take another clone off of the bagseed beast. but three clones at one shot...I don't want to hurt her too bad. the other three clones are kind of getting droopy now but from what I understand that is supposed to be normal for the first few hours. right?

hey bro your grow is looking good and clean but with your clones you need to take a branch at least 2 nodes in length, trim and discard the lower leaves cut the bottom of the branch on 45deg angle dip in cloning gel an place into rockwool, rapid rooters whatever and then under the lights
i will include an informative link from JJScorpio it has step by step pics so you get the idea
Good luck with the cloning and dont give up on it if it doesn't work the first time
peace

thanks I will take a look at that. I'm not easily discouraged, I didn't do this well the last time and I'm happy with how things are going so if I mess up, I'll try something else. I have a lot more seeds to play with now too...but I am liking that bagseed plant a lot and it's one I wanted to keep around in spirit :) so far a couple of hours later it's looking like only one of them is all wilty but the other three are holding up alright. I went and checked on the seedlings before, it's crazy how fast some of those lil guys grow...one was pushing up to the top of the rooter a few more millimeters just a few hours after I looked at it initially...
thanks for the input be safe.
i'm having a blast with it no matter what.

well they perked straight up the biggest one is standing up like a flagpole...but since it is just the one fan leaf, i'm guessing it's not going to branch out or anything and what i will have is a leaf with a root structure? and am i going to hurt the plant if i take a cutting from the right place, and try to start that the same day as i cut the fan leaves? i don't want to put too much stress on the plant. i want to keep it back as a mom under the MH when i start to flower the rest since I don't have more seeds of that strain and it seems to be a fast grower which is what i need right now.
i was pretty much doing things as JJScorpio laid them out in that article but I cut the wrong portion to root. since it perked up i'm guessing my technique is ok. i made a quick cut off the plant, submerged the fresh cut end in RO water, made my 45 degree cut under water and scored it a bit, took it out and dipped it in the gel and then in to the cloner under the CFL.

you should be right i have taken 10-15 cuts from bigger plants at 1 time it might just slow the plant a little while it recovers
your method sounds right you just needed to cut the right part

clone update :)

clone update :)

i took two cuts off the right portion of the plant and started two proper clones in the bubbler. i didn't want to take the leaves i had already popped in out, i was just happy to see them spring back to life. when i take some more clones i'll pull them out, when the other ones veg out a bit more i'll take some from them.
i'm soooo excited to learn how to clone successfully because it will save me so much time and i'll have a nice little forest to tend to soon.
thanks for the input it really did put me on the right track.
we'll see when i get some roots.
and the ballast for the HPS light stopped buzzing after it warmed up.:abduct:

ok, here they are again, fourteen hours later. i noticed them sagging so i clipped the ends of some of the larger leaves per a suggestion from the person who started me out growing. but overall they look like they are doing ok to me. cool!
