True narcissism often causes the afflicted to be limited in ability to examine themselves in anything approaching an objective, humbled and critical view.

We keep electing those who attempt to project the aura of strong leaders, but having strong leaders also leads to problems where the things those strong leaders don't care for.

In Trump's case, add a dose or 2 of sociopathy and white collar criminality, and we've had this time in our history to witness the reality of electing those who posture, but don't deliver, and whose interests were suspect all along.

Unfortunately, there's too many such cretins in both primary parties, though few who can hold a candle to Trump's level of derangement and imbalance.

We've seen new lows, and yet, we've had leaders in the past who killed millions, and shrugged their shoulders. That whole strong leader thing sometimes has sharp edges.
