There is a universal principal that is seen applied to ordered economic societies again and again that bears on this matter.
It takes money to make money.
I can't tell you how many jobs I didn't get as a youngster because I didn't have the degree. All of these people said the same thing. If you had the degree we would snap you up in a heartbeat, but our hands are tied. This is a degreed position.
The fact of the matter is that the degree gives you access to a level of jobs that people who don't have a degree will never be able to obtain; they don't know the secret handshake and have not been initiated into the game. College is the last vestige of our class society where we use access to provide the means of future (and permanent) discrimination because these people paid the price to be able to be part of the club.
Every spare nickle Mrs. MPD and I ever earned went towards the education of our kids. They have degrees and they have great jobs. One is a lawyer, while another is a stockbroker. Another one works for EDS and another is an insurance executive. Yes, they all had school loans, but they did just fine and so will you.
America is the only place in the world where you can achieve the dream and then be allowed to be pissed off at a system that allows you to live a more privileged life than 2/3rds of the remaining world population and that isn't good enough.
