This sculpture represents the Virgin Mary with a veil draped over her face.
Although carved in marble, her veil looks as light and transparent as if it were real.
Sculpting veils like this one was popular among 19th century Italian sculptors because it allowed them to demonstrate their skill and show off how realistic they could make their statues
