What sounded worse to me was the anecdote I read about a similar accident, where a teenage girl had her feet chopped off at the ankles due to a ride malfunctioning at Six Flags (apparently no fault of her own). I bet today she is the richest cripple in America. But imagine being without feet. I guess I wouldn't mind too much if I had $1,000,000 in my bank account. With a cool million, you would not have to work anymore, just live off the interest of a long-term bond that earned, say, 6% (that's $60,000 a year, not bad).
I remember my boss telling me there was no way he would quit his job if he won the lottery, unless the take was > 2,000,000, and I thought to myself what a fool. It's not incredibly difficult to stash a mil in a corporate bond fund. But he thought he needed more.

Then I would pay, what is it, $100,000 for artificial feet or maybe just $50 for a peg-leg, and just hobble around. Hey just sit on the couch and turn into a big potato.
As for severed heads, the brain remains aware for about a minute after circulation stops, think about when you hold your breath, it's the same thing. So he was looking around wondering why he rolled across the ground so fast, and wondering where the rest of his body was. Of course he couldn't scream without lungs so the only thing to do is open and close the lips like a fish out of water. The facial expressions are the creepiest, you can see the astonishment and surprise. Marie Antoinette is said to have lasted a good 2 to 3 minutes, she made comical expressions to her supporters, sticking her tongue out and mocking the Revolution, too bad she couldn't vocalize, but she was definitely mouthng words like "merde" and "baissez-vous". This is part of the historical record, look it up, though some histories try to censor the obscene language.
