Looks like this forum doesn't get as much attention as it should. I'm not a big fan of hash oil, but I have been making hashish for a couple of years. I have designed and built most of my equipment with parts readily available.
I typically like the quality from dry-sieved and typically run my trim through my tumbler which is made from an old fish aquarium with a BBQ rotisserie motor. I holds approximately 4 oz./run. If you only tumble, you are missing out on a lot of trichomes that weren't easily removed.
I always put my post tumbled trim back into the freezer, and then run it through my washer and bags. I have the 5gallon Bubble Bags. I haven't used any of the others, but I don't think I'd bother. I have run over 100 batches through the same bags. Keep them clean and they'll last for a long time.
In using these bags, I have come up with a lot of tricks that may or may not have been mentioned on here.
1. Squirt bottle: This $3 investment will save you lots of headaches when you are trying to scrape the bags. i use a plastic spoon the lightly push down on the center of a stretched bad. Then lightly spray the perimeter of the bags which makes the trichomes collect in the bottom by the spoon. I always do this over the same bucket. It is a smaller diameter bucket that makes it much easier the stretch the bag out. When you are done with all of your runs, then I run the liquid back through the bags again.
2. Bag Flipping: I use the 220u bag as a strainer in a bucket of its own. Then I run through 120u, 73u and 25u. I flip the 120u and 73u bags in between runs. It is almost impossible to get all of the trichomes off of the bags from scraping. If you flip the bags inside out, the left over trichomes will drop down to the next screen. The only bag that I don't turn inside out is the 25u.
3. Pressing: This is the biggest problem that I see most people have. They have a nice pile of trichomes and they press them together into a crumbly slab. Most of the hash I see at the dispensaries looks like this. I much prefer a hash where the trichomes have been crushed and have released their oils.
To me good hash should have the consistency of a Tootsie Roll thats been left in the sun. Once it gets to this point it can be successfully cured. The taste difference between a cured and fresh hash is amazing.
So how do you press it? I built a bottle jack press and use a mold, but I have recently found a new method. I use my forklift at work and press the trichomes with 6000lbs of pressure. After doing it this way for awhile, the jack press is collecting dust.
These are just some things i've learned and experienced. I am yielding about 45grams/lb. of good trim. I know there are lots of others making hashish in their garage. Always love to learn new things!
