so much for TOR, then ...

The FBI has dropped a case against an alleged sex offender rather than reveal information about the methods used to obtain evidence against him. Authorities arrested a Washington state middle school teacher for allegedly accessing a website through the Tor network known to host child abuse material (pornography). Federal investigators were surreptitiously operating the site at the time, using a tool that revealed Tor users' IP addresses. A judge ordered the FBI to disclose the source code for the tool it used to identify the suspect but instead, the FBI has dropped its appeal.

ill take a wild guess at what happened based of all the other pedo busts

secret tool = to watch videos you had to enable java , java being some glitchy pos gave away tor users ip

so the fbi went to the judge and told him that they

set up a child porn website
100,000s of individuals used the website
10s of millions of videos and pic views
pms between members show children were pimped out

and that after all their "hard work" and money spent it resulted in a grand total of under 10 suspects......

judge lost his shit and told them to fuck of

A site hosted on tor is not supposed to be able to determine ip address. The feds have been able to snoop on tor traffic for years now.

My question would be, do they still have to 'control' the gateways to snoop or have they figured out how to just decrypt traffic?

Sounds like a typical govt op

It's called a honeypot and has been done for decades

Ya that's the trap for nasty peados but what this is about is the FBI and probably every other security organisation around the world can track your ip address even when you use tor to hide ya self.
I've said for ages now if you use vpn or anything to hide your activity online you are just waving a banner saying I'm doing dodgy stuff, pay attention to me.

using tor = dodgy stuff, vpn = normalish, usual if you work from home

tor + vpn

They are both flagged by isp. My isp straight up told me they would throttle my internet if I used a vpn. Personally I stopped using both years ago. If you're running both on a flash drive clean comp and someone else Internet you're still at an advantage against the dragnet if you don't fuck up like these sick fucks.

But yeah they destroyed truecrypt and all those other companies years ago to make their jobs easier. They would implant that shit on your comp if they wanted you badly enough and knew they could get away with it.

so my question is, why are there still hackers? that is, why are they allowed to continue? since all IPs can be known. and, why no financial security ... PCI DSS compliance being a pretty blunt tool, imo

essentially the government can't break Tor encryption per se
but they can hack a tor user's computer, the hack coming from the compromised Tor node that was visited
so government is just another hacker, albeit a big one
and hacking could be shut down if you want to effectively shut down the internet as it exists
which hasn't happened yet, economic disaster
but the future is always unknown

Tor IS secure. Anyone who was caught while using Tor was caught by other methods. In this case, the FBI took over and operated a child porn site that they had seized. They used the site to attach some custom malware to user's computers. Then the malware got their IP and ratted on them. It has nothing to do with TOR at all, except that in this case, they couldn't get their info, BECAUSE OF TOR, so they had to give them some malware and let the malware grab the ip from the "normal" network. If you look at other cases of people using TOR getting caught, they are also caught using things that aren't tor. Usually they have timing issues. There are a few nice videos on TOR. Take a peek at Adrian's videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G1LjQSYM5Q

i suspect we won't find out the real names, and it really doesn't matter what the name is
the problem ultimately is all of our computers are likely breakable
computer security is a complicated beast
some setups are much better than others, Windows is like bending over for the soap
uncrackable computers would be interesting, guess how the US government would react to that

I think they could hack tor from the very start.

I mean the US Navy built it, and are they going to build something that will allow terrorists to communicate anonymously to plan the next 9/11?

I think there was a back door built into it from the start, they just don't want to tell everyone as they don't want the terrorists to stop using it so they can keep on monitoring them.

But I take the view that the powers that be can monitor anything you do on the internet.

The question is do they want to? Best not to give them an excuse to do so.

Apparently your Internet Provider reports you every time you use tor, and if you use it too often you will raise a flag for investigation.
