its always been my understanding roots go out as well as down same as trees need wide roots to stand.. deep to feed in dry times.. and that what ever a plants width is above ground the roots go out as far under ground...but anyway mine stay in keg cups for 50 to 60 days with no probs waiting for there turn to go into the big pots... and most of the time the roots make it to the bottom of the cups in a week and the pots too...why not try a couple each way and see what works best for u and ur strain.. best of luck
