Buddy Roemer Quits Presidential Race
s-BUDDY-ROEMER-large.jpg

Buddy Roemer, the former Louisiana governor who unexpectedly jumped into the GOP presidential primary, and subsequently jumped out of that race to unsuccessfully be a part of whatever it was Americans Elect imagined itself to be doing, announced Thursday that he is suspending his presidential campaign. He cited ballot access, which is sort of a critical ingredient to running for president, as his main reason for quitting the race.

In a statement received via email Thursday morning, Roemer writes:

Today, I am no longer a candidate for President of the United States.

After 17 months of a wonderful campaign, the lack of ballot access in all 50 states makes the quest impossible for now.

After thanking everyone associated with his long-shot campaign, Roemer continues on, restating his reason for running -- his desire to raise awareness of the toxic effect of money in politics -- before touching on the some of consequences one faces for running a campaign against entrenched corporate interests. For example: those entrenched corporate interests make sure you're never allowed to participate in the debates, even as Rick Perry, bumbling through his attempts to form sentences in English, is allowed to participate. (Roemer's campaign spokesman, Carlos Sierra, is best remembered for when he angrily, and accurately, referred to the constantly shifting requirements for participating in the primary debates as "bullshit rules.")

From Roemer's press release:

We ran like we would serve – Free to Lead. To protect that freedom, we fully disclosed every contribution. We accepted no contributions above $100. We accepted no PAC money, no Super PAC money, no corporate money, and no lobbyist money.

We assumed no debt and we end this campaign with money in the bank. Once again, we ran like we intended to serve. We received contributions averaging less than $50 each from thousands and thousands of Democrats, Republicans and Independents in all 50 states.

We were not included in a single one of the 23 nationally televised GOP debates, and yet received 7% of the popular vote in a national poll conducted just a few weeks ago. My team was amazing and I thank you.

America is a nation at risk. Job prospects are inadequate. Trade is neither smart nor fair. The tax code is unreadable and, I say, un-American. The budget is unsustainable. Small business must be re-vitalized. Energy has no strategy. Healthcare is not healthy. Banks are still too big to fail, and comprehensive immigration reform is a fantasy.

We can turn all these problems into opportunities, but we must begin our battle with the special interests who are content with the status quo. They don’t want change. They spend billions to keep their control. They own our political system. They bought it with their fundraisers for incumbents, and with jobs for the already powerful. They bought it with special favors and inside information for those who can return the gesture in amendments and legislation and earmarks. They finance the elections. They hire the politicians upon their retirement. And they own the two major political parties. It’s un-democratic and it’s simply un-American.

Look at the facts. 98% of the electorate does not give a penny to presidential or congressional campaigns. The money comes from Wall Street banks, corporate PACs, the labor union coffers, insurance and pharmaceutical companies, Big Oil, military defense contractors, miscellaneous PACs, Super PACs and the lobbyists. The money comes from all of these special interests, and what do they get in return? “Too big to fail” and the death of Glass-Steagall, insurance monopolies, pharmaceutical profit protection, no-bid contracts, $675 hammers for the military, earmarks, $5.1 billion in profits and pay no federal income taxes, subsidies for the wealthiest corporations, and all of the big givers first in line for any perks or favors.

The special interests give the money and they get a stacked deck in return. And what do we get? We get gridlock, corruption, a do-nothing Washington, and a Congress almost certain to be re-elected year after year.

Roemer's clarion call got little traction in major media outlets, who treated this entire cause as strange and unwanted. He did manage to find a few platforms from which to get his message out, however. His appearances on the late-night political comedy circuit brought out the best in Roemer, who despite being aggrieved by the current state of our politics, carried himself with warmth and a good sense of humor. He was especially great when he teamed up with Stephen Colbert in his efforts to ridicule super PACs.

Roemer was also pretty terrific on Twitter, frequently taking to the social media service to comment on the debates to which he wasn't invited, and keeping up his fight against the corporate influence in Washington in a generally snarky manner.

Back in December of 2011, Roemer announced that he was going to pursue the presidency with Americans Elect while continuing to compete in the GOP primary. It was an odd fit from the beginning, as Roemer's candidacy as a self-styled reformer clashed with Americans Elect's creators, who were precisely the sort of moneyed elites that Roemer wanted to chase out of the civic square. Roemer never took very well to AE's lack of overall transparency, but the organization's ability to secure ballot access was something he could not afford to pass up.

In February of this year, Roemer ditched the GOP primary entirely, pressing ahead in the hopes that either AE or the Reform Party could get him on the ballot. But Americans Elect was not, ultimately, up to the task of generating sufficient interest -- by mid-May, it was pretty clear that so few people wanted to participate in its weird online nomination process that no candidate on offer had managed to secure the level of support needed to move on to its online "caucus" process. (Though of all the declared candidates, Roemer garnered the most support.) Thursday, we learned that the Reform Party could not achieve the one thing AE was successful at -- securing ballot lines.

In his announcement, Roemer hints that he will continue to fight for reform by building a movement from the remains of his campaign:

As I am no longer a candidate for president, I am free to pledge a good portion of the rest of my life to enacting campaign reform in the halls of Congress and the corridors of the White House. Instead of using my right to the floor of Congress to lobby for corporate clients, I will lobby for the American people who want reform.

It might require a new organization to get this done, but regardless, we will highlight corruption and its effects on policy and public perception, suggest solutions, build coalitions, and support the advocates of our ideas or those who have better ones.

This struggle will not be easy. The enemies of reform are powerful and entrenched, but this is a struggle that America must win. The key is to realize that I cannot beat them alone. This will take a team effort. We must work together, setting aside inevitable differences on other issues in order to build a reform team. We must dare to look at a total reform package including contribution reform, reapportionment reform, and term-limit reform. I cannot do this alone. True and thorough reform will not occur solely as a “me” effort. This must be a “we” effort.

This sort of movement-building is arduous, of course, but Roemer can look to the example of Ron Paul, whose own failed runs for the White House have nevertheless led to an impressive grassroots movement, which is getting footsoldiers trained in the peculiarities of the primary process and helping like-minded candidates get nominated and elected.

At any rate, with Roemer out of the running, the field is reduced to a couple of servants to larger corporate interests and, you know, Gary Johnson.

Happy enough to still support it even though you know it's wrong. Just so long as the destructive policies don't effect you personally right?

The thing is, it protects world wide capitalism just as much as it protects US interests.

The Fed is a weapon of Capitalism. The Fed keeps 'markets' going when they would otherwise freeze up. Its a weapon controlled by the US, and no one else has a weapon like ours.

So the 'support' is not just me.

And all the people clamoring for 'free markets' obviously do not understand the Feds roll (Roll vs. what they actually do can obviously be debated.)

Throwing the baby out with the dirty bath water is not an intelligent move.

I believe in socialism when it comes to necessities like water, electricity, and healthcare (you can have back my price controlled cable bill). Everyone needs water, and healthcare to live. Electricity is relatively important too.

So my trepidation with the Feds actions, are obviously not the same as those preaching for 'unfettered capitalism'.

'Ron Paul Festival' Could Bring 100k Supporters to GOP Convention

More details are emerging about the plans of Ron Paul supporters to stage a special "Ron Paul Festival" leading up to the Republican National Convention in Tampa this August.

The festival is to feature speeches, rallies, and entertainment for the three days immediately prior to the opening of the GOP convention. Organizers say they expect up to 100,000 people to attend.

[Gingrich: Ron Paul 'Biggest Danger' For Romney in Tampa.]

The event is to be held at the Florida State Fairgrounds, not far from the convention site in Tampa.

Organizers also say that they expect an appearance by Paul, the lone remaining challenger to Mitt Romney for the GOP nomination, and possibly his son, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, if the crowd at the festival is sufficiently large.

Some Republican party officials and Romney supporters are concerned that the festival might be a prelude to demonstrations on the streets and protests on the convention floor by disappointed Paul backers who don't support Romney as the presumptive nominee.

But festival organizer Bryan Siemon told Business Insider, "Hopefully, the festival is where they'll get all of the yelling and screaming out," so by the time they get to the convention, they will heed Paul's call for civility and respect for their political adversaries.

Thanks to all the hard work of C4L's dedicated activists, we've just received word that H.R. 459, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act will receive a vote in the House this July!

Audit the Fed recently passed a cosponsor milestone with more than half the House of Representatives now publicly supporting the bill.

With hundreds of thousands of petitions, emails, faxes, and phone calls pouring into Congressional offices from around the country, now is the time for Audit the Fed to become law of the land!

Please continue to support our efforts as we double down on the pressure on the House and Senate!

We've come a long way since C4L made Audit the Fed our top legislative priority in 2009, and the limited audit passed last Congress has only strengthened our resolve for complete transparency at the Federal Reserve.

Breaking: Romney did not win nomination

Incredible developments have emerged spelling out how Romney may not have actually taken the nomination, after all.

Even with news circulating like wildfire that Romney secured the Republican nomination with an alleged win in Tuesday's Texas Primary, it seems as though this may not actually be the case. Ironically enough, Romney still may not have even taken Texas, yet.

After a careful comb through the numbers, how the race is playing out and what delegate totals are emerging from the states, it seems as though Romney currently has only around half of the 1,144 delegates needed to win the Republican nomination.

So, why is the 'national' media acting this way? Are they incorrectly still using the 'estimated' delegate totals, based on the initial caucuses and primaries from each state, while ignoring the actual delegate totals emerging as the states finally begin to conclude their weeks-long delegate selection processes?

Every 4 years the GOP does the exact same nomination process and all 50 states play their roll in that process. Some states conclude rather quickly, some rather slowly. Most of the states, however, have some sort of post-caucus/primary delegate selection process that can take, up to, a couple months to complete.

This virtually renders the ultimate outcome unattainable until the vast majority of the states have fully concluded their delegate selection process. Until then, it is virtually impossible to know exactly what each candidate has, in terms of delegate totals.

It is, however, possible to keep track of how the candidates are doing and how many delegates they are likely winning as the states progress in their delegate selection process. Who is taking the delegates at each state's county, then district, then state conventions ultimately determine how many delegates each candidate will receive from each state.

At this juncture, according to one of the the only sites on the internet currently dedicated to keeping a tally of the actual delegate totals emerging from each state, Romney has around 600 delegates, Paul around 200.

However, this starts to become an issue because what seems to be emerging from many of the states is the fact that Ron Paul is coming out with the majority of the delegates in quite a few of them.

So far, Paul seems to have taken the majority of delegates in, at least, 11 or more states, Romney in only 19. Santorum and Gingrich are virtual non-factors with ultimately very few, to no 'state' wins between them.

Even though it is likely Romney will gain many more delegates in the run up to the RNC, Ron Paul will also continue to rack up delegates as well, leaving it extremely unlikely Romney will amass the total needed to win the nomination.

The totals gained by the other candidates that have been factors in this GOP nomination cycle, along with incredible amount of Ron Paul delegates emerging from the states, all likely equal an amount far exceeding what Romney could afford to have lost in order to have secured 1,144 delegates by Utah's final primary.

Especially considering there is no such thing as a “bound” delegate at the national level, despite what some are trying to claim, Romney is not only nowhere near locking up the nomination, a brokered convention is now almost a guarantee, leaving the Ron Paul Revolution squarely in the driver's seat.

I am home!

Thanks to the OP for starting a new thread. Thought I was seeing things when I opened the forum and saw the title.

As always am happy to see all the like minded friends here and some of those that disagree but at least have a rationale for doing so.... Hope the trolls that got the last one closed stay under the bridge!

Missed my Daily Dr. Paul reading and all the associated Truth postings!

Peace

“Banking was conceived in iniquity and was born in sin. The bankers own the earth. Take it away from them, but leave them the power to create money, and with the flick of the pen they will create enough deposits to buy it back again. However, take it away from them, and all the great fortunes like mine will disappear and they ought to disappear, for this would be a happier and better world to live in. But, if you wish to remain the slaves of bankers and pay the cost of your own slavery, let them continue to create money.” – Sir Josiah Stamp, Director of the Bank of England (appointed 1928). The establishment is trying to block paul fest,*** http://paulfestival.org/ *** .

http://communities.washingtontimes....y/2012/jun/2/ron-paul-republican-block-event/

"TAMPA, June 2, 2012 – Ron Paul may have stopped actively campaigning in primary states that have not yet voted, but his Revolution shows no sign of slowing down.

Just a few days after the media erroneously reported that Ron Paul had dropped out of the presidential race, he won 80% of the delegates going to the Republican National Convention (RNC) from Minnesota.

His supporters are now organizing a massive event on the eve of the RNC to celebrate their ideas and Paul’s 77th birthday. Not just a political rally, Paul Festival will be three days of music, entertainment and activism featuring nationally-known musicians, comedians and other entertainers.

It will also feature plenty of the ideas of what Paul’s supporters call “the liberty movement.”

Reminiscent of Paul’s Rally for the Republic during the RNC in 2008, the event may have the Republican Party concerned about being upstaged again. The 2008 event sold out the Target Center in Minneapolis.

This time, Paul’s supporters are attempting to secure the Florida State Fairgrounds, where they expect an estimated 40,000 people per day to attend. The Republican Party is trying to block them.

The RNC has first dibs on virtually every venue in Tampa during the week of the convention. In order to secure the fairgrounds, Liberty Unleashed, the nonprofit group incorporated in Florida by Paul supporters, can only sign a contract for the fairgrounds with the agreement of the RNC Committee on Arrangements (COA).

It was reported locally in Tampa on May 23rd that both Paul Festival organizer Deborah Robinet and fairgrounds director of sales and marketing Terry Parnell expected to sign a contract that week. However, Robinet told supporters in an e-mail last night that the RNC “had blocked our attempt.”

According to the e-mail, Liberty Unleashed was told that the RNC has “other requests for the fairgrounds that we need to evaluate’ and ‘no, this isn't first-come-first-served. Your event is not approved and it may take two more weeks."

The COA is closed on weekends and could not be reached for comment.

The Republican Party’s apprehension over such an event is understandable. The RNC is supposed to be a three-day infomercial for the party that unites Republicans around their nominee for president. Yet, despite the media narrative that Mitt Romney secured the nomination after his Texas primary win, NPR reports that he still doesn’t have enough delegates bound to vote for him on the first ballot at the convention.

Worse yet, there are an undetermined number of delegates that are bound to him that are actually Paul supporters – and who would abandon him and vote for Paul if Romney failed to get 1,144 votes on the first ballot.

None of this is in the RNC script. Neither is a massive rally for the anti-establishment candidate going on at the same time. The party can’t even appeal to Paul to call it off. While Paul’s campaign organized the Rally in 2008 in an act of defiance against a party that had snubbed Paul and his supporters, neither he nor the campaign have anything to do with this one.

“Paul Festival is different,” says Robinet. “It is being organized by the grassroots with no help from the campaign. As unpaid volunteers, we are solely responsible for raising the money to make this happen.”

"Our goal is to honor the man, whom we feel is the Founding Father of our movement, his message, and all that his message encompasses. Dr. Paul's 77th birthday is August 20th, just 4 days before the festival. We intend to have a birthday celebration the likes of which he's never seen. People from all over the political spectrum will be there because he unites us all in his message of freedom for everyone.”

This is the kind of enthusiasm that the party’s nominee is supposed to generate, but it’s non-existent for Romney. Despite his primary successes, he’s hasn’t even been able to get his delegates seated in many states where he won the primary by a wide margin. It’s no secret that there is a strong anti-Romney undercurrent among traditional conservatives.

Certainly, no one will be organizing a “Romney Festival” anytime soon.

This puts the party in a difficult position. If they strong arm the Paul supporters by blocking their event, they risk losing their votes. If they acquiesce to allowing the event, their spin doctors will have to work overtime to keep the RNC from looking like an afterthought following a festival for the other guy ten times as large.

Whatever they decide, the 2012 RNC will not follow the usual script. The Ron Paul people just cannot seem to remember their lines.

But it’s going to be fun."

^^^^^ Now that is a "Catch 22"! Hopefully this is going to be a very interesting election.

Do you suppose some great crisis will arise to divert the public's attention as it did in "08"...... bet it does.

Reputed to be the 2nd wealthiest man in England at that time.

There is no verifiable source for that speech.... just a vague claim that it was given at a university in Texas....It is also claimed that this was said in 1927--do you suppose he would have gotten appointed head honcho of the BOE a year after saying that.
