What's new

real fast Qs about seeds on plants

When you make seeds, how do you know when they are ready and viable?
Will the breeder have to wait longer than "peak harvest time?"

Oh, and is there anything extra to feed to help the process?

Thanks.

It takes about 3-5 weeks after pollenation to create viable seed.

Sometimes like on this Mississippi Mud from JLP, the seeds just start coming off the plant themselves even when it is not a late harvest and they are just ready as he said 3-5 weeks down the road. Some may be ready before that, some may not be ready after that, but most are ready within that time. It just depends on how much you pollinate the whole plant or just a branch or two. When and how early you pollinate. Where you pollinate top or bottom. But the average given is spot on, and sometimes when they are ready they just start showing themselves.

With larger seeds they usually split the calyx and you can visibly seewhen the seed looks mature. Sometimes with small seeds that don't split the calyx I'll pull a calyx and open it to see how mature the seed is.

Polinate early for two reasons...one is that you will have fat and viable seeds at harvest time and also you will not over polinate and come out with lots of small unusable seed. Usually in the second week is good, there are enough female flowers to accept the pollen but not too much that you end up with an unsmokeable result.

This all depends on how many seeds you are going for...in the case of personal use, best to hand polinate with a very small artist brush and do so on the lower branches.
If you want a jonny apple seed sac worth, then just shake the male over the female at multiple times and let nature take her course.
