I have a protein skimmer from a salt water fish tank set up. What would it do in a dwc? Would it remove any bad things , good things , or just add more air?

I use a Danner Supreme Skilter 250 for filtration and additional aeration. Also the filter serves as an additional colonizing point for beneficial bacteria in my bio-buckets. I have found the actual protein skimming function to be unnecesary, and I have removed the riser tube and the foam catch tray. I also removed the carbon portion of the filter, as it may remove some nutrients. I replaced the carbon filter with another regular filter and change one out about every month (or whenever it starts to clog up with root particles) this maintains bacteria count levels. The filter is hanging off of my reservoir, and certainly hasn't hurt anything... whether or not it has helped is unknown, as I have never grown differently.
