Many have experienced great success in ground, myself included, which is also supported by all data compiled from the 1950's to date. There is no shortage of studies in virtually every region and condition, with a wide variety of plants which has not yielded positive results with sizable control groups side by side.

I can see that if you were to add them into a dry area that doesn't get much rain and they never get a chance to absorb moisture they would be useless, but 1lb can absorb 47 gallons of rainwater and does so quite effectively. Im looking at 2 lbs of polymers per 90 gallons of native soil that is nearly 100 gallons of potential holding capacity in soil that is inadequate for holding water effectively.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9rXaGaDweM for anyone curious on how the stuff works, interesting to see that salt basically destroys its water retaining abilities I wonder if salt based fertilizers can cause the same effect? I hope not.
