I Use Both
I will ocassionally run a liquid test side by side with my tri-meter pen. Just to get used to looking at the colors, in case I need to function without my fancy meter.
By the way, Reference solution is cheap. I just keep a bottle of the 4.01 solution on my bench. Before I use my meter I just eyeball a bench calibration. If it's within my tolerance which is plus or minus .04 I know i don't need to worry about doing a full cal. Make sense?
I like this cuz it gives me an idea of how the probe is functioning, by giving me an idea of how much and how quickly Ph tends to drift.
It also gives u a heads up on when cleaning is indicated. If you get lots of drift and a good cleaning doesn't make your probe straighten up and fly right, it's gonna need replacing sooner than later.
