yes its a severe problem and it could a variety of things really. if you are using 'complete' soil that already has ferts ten you need to take care about feeding - they probably wont need any for a few weeks.
make sure you have plenty of drainage material like perlite mixed into the soil 20-30%
i would do some research on soil mixes and try something different next time. looks like you will get some smoke this time round at least.
also check the roots when you harvest them, see if you can see any root aphids or other problems
