was just reading on FireWire 800 vs. USB and the transfer for USB is 280MHz vs 3200MHz for FireWire 800. That is one hell of a difference in speed. I have seen the difference on my mac but only when working with video or audio files. I will say this about USB, it is a hell of a lot more stable on MAC's than on most PC's

eSata > Firewire > USB for external connections =D

Get a Mac used laptop on craig' List. Intel only. anything else and you are an idiot and don't ask for help. Just buy and then cry later when you have problems.

PC's and windows are for idiots that don't know better or can't afford the extra $100 bucks now, but defend the extra $500 bucks later as they spend to keep it running virus and problem free.

One thing that bugs me about most of the new mac generation is that they are plug and play stupid. they have no idea of how to fix any of their programs or hardware and then go to the mac store and pay out the ass for repair work. I cut my teeth in the windows world and yes it was painful but dammit it taught me a lot. that cant be said for at least 75% of the people who have bought a mac since the ipod came out.

LOL, you know i totally forgot about eSATA. But in my defense, I dont use it at the moment and dont see it outside of the enthusiast realm much. the every day user hasnt fully embraced it yet but it wont take much longer.

hell the lenovo computers i work with all have HDMI out standard on board... that tripped me out when i first saw it. how the times have changed, lol.

that's an incredibly ignorant, rude, and pretty poorly informed thing to say. Simply because other peoples opinions differ from yours it makes then an idiot or broke? Or every PC user is a drooling idiot that gets their systems infested?

I, for one, use both platforms, as well as fedora. Everything has it's pluses and minuses; different tools for different jobs. Not to mention compatibility with various types of software and hardware.

The difference is, I built all of my systems from scratch, including my OSX system. I refuse to pay apple's enormously inflated prices for mid level hardware. Build your own system, with the exact parts you want, to your exact specs, and boot whatever the hell you want on it. I decided to boot all 3, Win 7 64bit, OS X Snow Leopard, and Fedora 11 =)

Yes, they seem to be popular and it would affect the number of units breaking down. This is just the experience I have had with them.

I have never owned an HP but I do know people that have.

One thing I will mention, all the years I have repaired computers I have never seen an IBM Thinkpad in my shop for hardware problems. I can't say the same for Dell, HP, Compaq, Acer, .....well....You get the picture.

after 3 years my IBM thinkpads screen started frying due to no damage i caused of my own. colored lines appeared top to bottom, one line at a time over about a year till it was covered in them. i still used it with an external monitor for another 2 years until its CPU fan broke. it costs 40$ to get that repaired so i just bought another PC. fair enough usage for a laptop id say. i got mine before lenovo took over though.

my use of this laptop would be quite limited in duration per day and only while I
travel in my motorhome so consideration of prolonged use wouldn't apply here, &
as I mentioned before I treat my personal goods w/the utmost respect and care.
battery life/usage also negligible as 90% of my intended use will be powered by
a/c current.

I'm leaning heavily toward HP basing my decision on size, price & the entertainment
software installed on the unit. sure I could get a lemon from any manufacturer but
considering my limited use both time wise & performance demand I should be happy.
I'll be sure to have a TV that has HDMI inputs & I can surf the web on a big screen.

That is a cool option.. I do not surf the web much on my tv.

But need some instant music? just plug your laptop into your tv when company unexpectantly arrives

I wouldn't buy a lap top that comes with an integrated web-cam and a mic. ....yup, i'm that paranoid. LOL!

Some lap tops are quite loud (fans).
They usually sound crap (music etc) with out external speakers.

some lap tops have shitty key pad and mouse, and many times they are ergonomically fairly bad to use.
Lap tops are fairly bad for your neck and back also, cause you're looking down wards usually with lap tops. ..but if you have external key pad + mouse, then you can lift the computer a little higher on the table (couple of thick books or something) so that it's more level with your eyes.

I would buy a "good enough" lap top + some usb-up grades, with some thing like 80 gb hard disk ( then i'd buy around 300gb external usb-hard drive), memory around 1024 ( maybe with 2 card slots, so 2 x 512) ...something that would work fairy well when used out side the home, but when used at home, i'd like to have few "usb-up grades"; bigger hd, better dvd-player, better speakers, external key pad and a mouse.

peace.

80 gigs? Jeez, that is one day use. Mine comes standard with a 500 g drive

That's why i'd buy an external bank at the same time. ..and it's good to have an external memory bank for back up savings "..don't put all the eggs in the same basket" ..all the viruses that plague the internet porn also, the times, the times..

Where i live lap tops start from around 400 euros and go up to 2000+ euros ..i'd buy a lap top costing around 700 euros and i'd use around 300 euros to the "external stuff".

HP's can be very solid units and the price is definitely right. I had to help advise my parents on one for my sister as she does her study abroad program and we found one in the 500 - 600 range that was very well equiped (4gb's of ram and a 250 gb hard drive with a good enough graphics card for playback)

A few things I would advise (and I would love to see commentary on these points, so add in guys/gals!)

1 - HP is HORRIBLE about preloading bloatware software that you will probably never use. I would advise upon purchasing your unit to look through what they have put on and take off anything you will not use. the third party vendors may be sending back blind info to their servers that you dont realize. (I typically take my laptops and wipe them of the operating system and reload a clean OS to avoid this bloatware)

2 - In regards to HDMI to a TV - make sure of your TV's resolution before you make your purchase. If your TV can display at 1080i or 1080p then thats pretty good, but if its stuck at 1280x720 (720p) then it does have a distorted look to it. I hooked up my main rig to my tv and it can only display at 720p and it drove me insane!

3 - With windows 7 coming out today you may want to see if you can get an HP with it preloaded rather than using Vista. I have heard that the service pack for Vista fixed a lot of the issues but I still really dislike that OS compared to what 7 runs like.

I have to agree with this, but I have seen alot worse. My unit came preloaded with a bunch of media software, and I never really use them, But they just sit idly there.

I know eventually I will need to reformat, when I do I will have to think about reloading stuff like their tv program, why would I watch tv on my pc, when I have Full Digital Cable and a 52 inch screen 4 feet away

bloatware?? hey! I resemble that remark!

I guess to rid myself of the bloatware I could walk the unit 'new' into
my ISP's office, there they do all sorts of work gratis to enable faster
more efficient web browsing.......

HAHA. If your ISP will help you clean the comp up then go for it bud. Just want to give you as much info as possible to consider when making your purchase =).

Dr. Dog - good point man, that is how I feel about it when the my laptop is at home. And with so many studios putting their shows on the net, all you really need is a good connection to stream the shows.
