[Sarah Good in the Dock]
[Sarah hanged]

"What evil spirit have you familiarity with? Have you made no contract with the devil?
No.
Why do you hurt these children?
I do not hurt them. I scorn it.
Who do you imploy then to do it?
I imploy no body.
What creature do you imploy then?
No creature. I am falsely accused."

Dialogue based on the examination of Sarah Good by Judges Hathorne and Corwin, from The Salem Witchcraft Papers, Book II, p.355

In the spring of 1692 a group of Puritan school girls developed hysteria and hallucinations after hearing tales of voodoo from a Carib Indian slave housekeeper. With fits, fainting, and tantrums they convinced the authorities to charge a variety of totally innocent citizens with witchcraft. In a religious fervor and panic hundreds were charged and twenty died before sanity prevailed. Seventeen were hanged including Sarah Good pictured and quoted above. Two died in prison and one man was "pressed" to death with rocks for refusing to plead before a twisted court that relied upon "spectral" evidence. The families, friends, and defenders of the innocent are similarly charged and punished on a variety of charges. To step in the way of this religious inquisition is to be suspected and crushed. Not only are the innocent hanged, their entire family fortune is forfeit to the State and auctioned off.

The aftermath of the Salem witch trials were nearly as bad as the trials and hanging themselves. Some years after the return of sanity to New England, all twelve jurors who found the innocent guilty published a public apology and asked forgiveness for their sins. The Chief Prosecutors father stepped in with the Governor to seek relief from his own son's depredations. Reading the son's religiously deluded writings would raise the hackles of anyone including their parents. (Cotton Mather pictured below).

[Cotton Mather- Salem Prosecutor]

The dawn of the Age of Enlightenment began in America with a horror story that profoundly influenced the development of Justice in the emerging nation. No longer would citizens be tortured, presumed guilty, or face scurrilous charges based on unscientific evidence such as the description of the "specters" of the alleged witches who allegedly tortured the hysterical girls. Church and State would be separate and inviolate.

At least that's what we thought.

[John Ashcroft- Prosecutor in Washington]

Comes now the religious right into power in Washington. Once again specters stalk the halls of justice. Puritan religious beliefs and customs once again have the force of law. Thousands of citizens are arrested for the use or distribution of medical cannabis and hundreds are sentenced to long and torturous prison terms. Cut off from their medicine some citizens die.

Evidence of innocence is kept from the court and jury. Jurors are horrified at the results and are publicly repentant. Family members, friends, and defenders of the innocent are once again charged and imprisoned. Anyone in the path of this religious juggernaut is going to be run over.

So, who are the new "witches" that must be exorcised? Incredibly, in the 21st Century the new evil ones are normal everyday citizens who are chronically ill or dying. They use medical cannabis to relieve their suffering. Unfortunately, the religious nuts who presently run America feel that suffering is good for the soul. Besides, they can't control cannabis and if the new puritans are anything they are concerned about control. Anyone who steps up to help the sick and suffering in religiously unapproved ways are bound for prison. One such citizen is pictured below:

[Ed Rosenthal- Wrongfully Convicted in Federal Court]

It's déjà vu all over again. The human weakness for religious delusion and the persecution of the "unbeliever" has not diminished. What is truly insane about the situation though is that instead of frightened school girls having hysterical fits we have the Attorney General John Ashcroft, Federal Judge Breyer, and Richard Meyers of the DEA having the fits. Not content with thousands of arrests they are presently rounding up the makers of ornate glassware that might be used as pipes for the wrong type of tobacco. "Operation Pipe Dream" has indicted over 50 citizens, shut down Internet commerce websites, and confiscated millions of dollars of inventory.

America cannot stand such hurtful and bizarre tantrums by those entrusted with justice. It's time for the grown-ups to take charge again before more innocent citizens are hurt or killed by religious fanatics whose bizarre beliefs are allowed to trump law, reason, and compassion.

Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority.
It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions.
There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern.
They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.

update on operation alesia:

Operation Alesia already nets county more pot than 2006

Redding Record Searchlight
July 20, 2007
http://redding.com/news/2007/jul/20/operation-alesia-already-nets-county-more-pot/

In the flurry of marijuana garden raids in the past two weeks, law
enforcement crews in Shasta County have pulled more plants than they did all
of last year, officials say.

As of Wednesday evening, the agencies involved with Operation Alesia had
yanked 242,620 pot plants
, said Sgt. Janet Breshears of the Shasta County sheriff's office. Last year, 237,000 plants were removed in the county.

Crews pulled more plants Thursday. After morning raids, they were still
clearing a group of gardens near Pit River Canyon at 5:30 p.m., Breshears
said.

"There are tons of plants out there," she said.

An updated tally wouldn't be available until today.

Operation Alesia -- a blitz on marijuana gardens involving 17 agencies that
started July 9 -- will continue until Thursday, Breshears said.

Shasta County had the most plants pulled of any county in the state in 2005
with 223,201, but ranked third last year. Breshears said Operation Alesia is
about making public lands safe and not about getting back on top of the
list.

Two men were arrested Thursday as part of the operation, according to the
sheriff's office. Gustavo Montez-Vasquez, 25, of Madera and Benjamin
Lozano-Rosas, 34, of Fresno were taken to the Shasta County jail and could
face federal charges of marijuana cultivation, Breshears said.

The two men are undocumented, and immigration and customs holds were placed
on both, a jail spokesman said.

A .38-caliber pistol and two rifles also were found in the garden, she said.

legalize the damn plant.

until then, lets get all of america growing, so we don't have to rely on these fucking retards with guns and booby traps growing for pure MONEY.

We need a push for small scale personal outdoor growing... perpetual autoflowering... everyone growing and giving away seeds...

I think THIS is how we will OVERGROW AMERICA...and the WORLD.

Guess that makes Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Ben Franklin and company terrorists as well . . . .

I echo the sentiments of others regarding getting the h*** out of this country if feasible. saw a bumber sticker the other day that said "If voting actually made a difference it would be illegal", which about sums up my feelings of late.

Please show where in the constitution it says that this is the job or jurisdiction of the federal government. I'll be waiting.

It seems to me that that quote is religious in nature rather than Constitutional. Not surprising for a Bush Administration shill.

Oh, well going on that quote, then why are they destroying the earth with depleted uranium munitions? They've done so much radioactive damage already it's not even funny anymore. Babies in Iraq being born as lumps of flesh because of mutations, and they've dumped so much it's in OUR air, water, and soil as well. Soldiers coming back with rectal cancer from sitting on ammo boxes. Sounds like they're trying to prevent disease alright.

Found any Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq yet? Because if they did, it would perhaps give some credibility to what the Bush administration says...
