Medusa Diamonds Syndrome

What is Medusa Diamond and fast crash Syndrome and what is being done about it?

Medusa Diamond syndrome is when gorgeous perfectly formed crystals turn to chalk over night or the "sauce" fast crashes into gravel while trying to initially precipitate out and grow the crystal. Techniques that formerly worked perfectly, no longer work.

Lots of effort trying to discover what was happening, as well as finger pointing, but it was narrowed down to something in the LPG, either present in virgin product, or a buildup of mono and sesquiterpenes from recycle.

Analysis of a chromatography column used to clean up the LPG revealed that the oxgenate and nitrogen layers in the column were enriched, and an analysis of the media suggested that the culprits were the Methanol and Diethanolamine used to remove CO2 and sulfur compounds from the sour crude now being released from national reserves.

Two methods have been investigated to remediate the problem, the first column chromatography and the second Liquid Liquid Extraction (LLE). While the debate as to exact cause remains active, both methods take out whatever it is creating the problem.

The following link outlines those systems and our current remediation status:

Sadly Graywolfslair.com is still down as we speak, but here is the latest Team Medusa update:

My appologies for the jumbled numbering/bullet point array. The article was numbered, but the forum format changed most of it to bullets, and I changed the remainder to be consistent.

Team Medusa update of 12-18-22

An update so ya’ll don’t think we’ve dropped the ball or fallen asleep on Medusa Syndrome, and to draw the recent Washington lawsuit regarding elevated benzene found in LPG to ya’ll’s attention, as it will likely impact some of our same supply and tank contamination issues.

See Benzene Lawsuit attached:

Moving on, here is the latest progress reported by Team Medusa:

  • GasLogix developed their own spin-on remediation column and contracted them from a FL manufacturer, whose plant was destroyed in the last hurricane.

  • They are currently attempting to establishing an alternate manufacturer, while considering the alternative of building them inhouse in the new modern facility they have in the works in AR.

  • Evolve Extraction from the misty land of ONT, shares their R&D report with us, which includes two DIY LLE LPG scrubbing system designs.

  • See attached Linden R&D Report

  • They also offer system engineering services for hire and now have their production LLE system in place and are ready for beta testing.

  • Alas they recently lost their test partner and are all dressed up, with nowhere to go, so if’n any of ya’ll live in Ontario, CN and wish to beta test their LPG in your process, contact: Adam@evolvedextraction.com .

  • Carbon Chemistry offers a wide selection of column media and the following suggested column packing material and ratios:

  • See attached Medusa Filter by Dillon
  • Medusa Scrubbing Column Conceptual by Dillon@CarbonChemistry

  • 3.1 Here is a conceptual of a similar column using sanitary parts:

  • See attached Medusa Mol Sieve Column

  • Medusa Scrubbing Column Conceptual using readily available Sanitary Parts
  • Timberline CBD has been using their own remedial cartridge but see it as only a partial solution, as it assuages the issue, but falls short of heaven, given that they still occasionally suffer fast crash syndrome, further enforcing their belief that there are more players involved.

  • Subzero Scientific has developed their own remedial column, which is currently available, and they have one available for testing.

  • They continue to develop their own LLE system.
. Solvent Direct reports that they have taken delivery of a new gas for analysis that the refinery presents as filtered for and is medusa free.

Dr R shares that the Nitrogen Chemiluminescence Detector that he installed was able to detect down to about 10 ppm MEA. Not as low as hoped and precision was low and prep tedious.

He is now reviewing Sensidyne Colorimetric gas detector tubes for our purpose, as a cheaper and easier to use solution.
  • Cortera Gas shares that they have organized their premium sources and their LLE is now on line supplying scrubbed LPG through select distributors.

  • Safeleaf has acquired the key components and are in the process of building their new LLE system.
