This article based on a University of Pittsburgh 12 year behavioral study of young people discovered that indeed, marijuana is not a gateway drug! It's certainly not anymore of a gateway drug than alcohol or tobacco. In fact the article concludes that other factors are far more important (parenting and environment) in determining whether a young person will end up using illegal drugs.
The study suggests that intervention strategies should not focus on the drug being used, but on the education of parents and mitigation of environmental issues (like illegal drugs being sold to kids in the neighborhood).
