LED to HID equivalence formula / rule of thumb?

I would like to expand upon rives statement, which I mostly agree with. 60% seems to be about right, how ever LED blows everything away with the PAR. 300 watts from a well made LED source, is more par than 600 HID at the same distance... it is the foot print that is lacking.

Sure, you can drive LEDs at max with some well engineered (and costly) heat dissipation... but when your in the 3 and 5 watt diode range...you don't need them at full power. I prefer to have mine under driven, intentionally.
