LED resources for the DIYer ?

You're thinking incandescent ligts. The whole reason LEDs are so sought after is that they are much, much more effecient, on the order of 90+% effecient

No and no, sorry. The only thing in all this that id regularly 90% efficient is a top quality driver. Not the LEDs. Its too hard to quote datasheets from my phone so for no I'll leave you with a quote from someone who knows more about led than either of us.
Even the most efficient blue LED dies still put out about 30% photometric power, and 70% heat.

I wonder if people will actually ever start to understand LEDs, or just keep listening to all this marketing bullshit maybe?

Commonly available HID's range from around 9-22%, while the best of them (low pressure sodium) is still under 30%.

The numbers in the article remind me of 1980s China Quality as even 20 years ago HPS lights reached over 30%.. so;
Lets throw in some real values:

Philips 600W HPS = ~36%
Osram 600W HPS = ~35%
Osram 150W HPS = ~ 28%
Osram 70W HPS = ~ 21%
Philips 315W CDM-TMW 942 = ~44%
Philips 315W CDM-TMW 930 = ~40%
Osram 400W HCI-TM 942= ~40%
Osram GD+ TopBin (660nm LED) = ~36-45%
Philips Lumileds Luxeon Rebel TopBin (660nm LED) = ~43-49%
Philips Lumileds Luxeon Rebel TopBin (450nm LED) = ~45-58%
Cree XM-L TopBin (CoolWhite LED) = ~34%-48%

Perhaps. The point was that LED's were nowhere close to 90%+ efficiency. I'd be interested in seeing how you derived your numbers on the HID's, though.

Here is a osram 125 watt array putting out 12,000lums 45% efficiency Bin 660nm deep reds

I bought a cheap Chinese bridglux 125 watt light to see how it was built ...
It only puts out only about 1/4 of the light as my osrams @ 4,000lums; and produces just as much heat ... or more ...

When I get more some more funds I will be adding the philips blue's
http://www.ledsupply.com/luxstripII.php

My light gets radiant light from the hps so the plants still get full spectrum ...

hey all,
have been checking out led resources myself, all new to me.

someone else on the site mentioned company called illumitex. spent way too long to be healthy reading all the blurb, seemed sound.

I'd really appreciate some input, if you've got the time to have a read.

Cheers.
