Beta I've read a bunch on this subject in the last week....Sadly it's like throwing water on a Duck... most of it runs off. I'll have to reread it all and make notes. lol Hell of a situation, never did learn to study, always relied on comprehension and retention and now that doesn't work so well.

Thx for looking over that CL add, as I'm still not familiar enough with this stuff to know what I'm reading. And also the input on the lamp safety.... that is what I was curious about... I did pick up on that issue on Rives thread,, I think.

Jhhnn As to the 240vac.... I'd have to bring in a licensed Elec to do it, as i'm up to the limit on the existing panel, so i'm really wanting to do a 120vac unit.

I have plenty of 120 in the area that I'll be using it in. I wired it with 20amp breakers and 12 gauge wire. Thought it was overkill 25 years ago. Not so much today of course.

No old parts to scavenge. Just some T5 stuff. So I'd have to go to the used Market to get everything.

Tell me what you think of this one.

http://denver.craigslist.org/grd/4969563945.html

I've emailed for details.

Is this a recognizable package? ....

Here's the response from the seller.

"
"""yes it includes 315w Philips Genuine (not knockoff ballasts which void philips lamp warranty..) Ballast, Hood, and Lamp complete for 339 ea. If you buy 12+ I can do even a bit better.

If you need to power only with 120v the transformer will fire 2 sets and cost 75."""

Hmmmm:)

I still wouldn't buy from them, simply due to their claims in the ad, especially due to their suggestion of running that lamp in an open fixture.

If you're not against DIY that would save you considerable cost.

I believe that all of the Philips mogul base 315's are open-fixture rated.

"In comparison to the original 2-pin Elite MW base, the new Mogul base lamp has a lower system cost, while maintaining the same performance in either an open or enclosed fixture."

Hmmm. Interesting. I assumed because there was no inside 'jacket' (like with pgz base) it wouldn't be open fixture rated. I'll contact Philips and confirm. (As well as try to find spec sheet for the lamp to see if it lists as open fixture rated.)

Thanks.

Looks like that's correct for EX39 base: http://download.p4c.philips.com/l4bt/3/385236/mastercolor_cdm_elite_mw_mogul_b_385236_ffs_aen.pdf

So now I have to issue mea culpa for complaining about the CL vendor making unsafe claim about using in open fixture.

Thanks, glad to learn I was wrong about this issue.

I believe that's correct. The pics here show internal scatter shields & the exclusionary mogul base w/ extended center contact. Open commercial fixtures have a complimentary socket so that they won't fire MH lamps rated only for enclosed fixtures. In the beginning, all MH lamps were built only for enclosed fixtures.

My T9's aren't built that way, but I don't need that because of the enclosed luminaire.

ALWAYS better safe than sorry. TY

So what I need is a 942 Lamp?
A Mogul Base.
And a Ballast_______? Any exclusions, suggestions, etc?

Perhaps in a 'circle the wagons' arrangement, with the bulb suspended vertically at 3'-7', depending on size of plants...???

Maybe do a DIY 'cool tube' to keep from frying myself. A circumcised 2 quart or gallon, jar maybe?

Sorry I didn't get back to the computer yesterday. Was helping mitigate basement flooding at a friend's house.
Got home a bit late, ate another cookie, and went to bed. Not accustomed to manual labor anymore. :)

Did I not see on a YouTube somewhere that the Phillips/Advance replacement ballast, had various 'tap offs' starting at 120vac? on the input side, and also some output variables as well? BRain fade perhaps.

The ATL site seems to indicate you need a step up transformer?
