I saw one once with railroad ties for the walls it was only dug down like 5 ft tho.....dude did ok....yeehaw

If those railroad ties are of the old creosote treated type they should not be used as creosote is a possible human carcinogen, and the EPA has banned residential use of creosote treated lumber

I would strongly suggest you account for how to deal with water coming, not just ground water but heavy rains. I would suggest having a perimeter trench drain which all the floors slope down at a pitch of 1/4" per foot, that is the standard for building roads, and for plumbing waste lines. The trenches should lead to a concrete holding vessel with a sump pump. This is how we build structures below grade when water is suspected to be an issue.
