went on a trip to the zoo recently
they said koalas have chinky red eyes because they are always high?? and that they eat a type of plant that gets them intoxicated to the point that they actually fall down from trees

has any one witnessed this?
what is the name of this plant?
and can any one chime in any additional knowledge they may have on the matter...

the zoo had theis plants in stock and they were feeding heavy doses lol,, is this animal cruelty when zoo keepers are getting their animals high,( and in front of kids for that matter). speaking of kids even the kid koala was gettin high:smoke out:

Do koalas get ‘drugged out’ on eucalyptus leaves?
No. There is a common misconception that koalas get ‘drugged out’ or ‘high’ on eucalyptus leaves and that’s why they sleep a lot. This myth possibly arose as a way of explaining why koalas sleep for up to 22 hours a day. They need more sleep than most animals because eucalyptus leaves contain toxins and are very low in nutrition and high in fibrous matter so they take a large amount of energy to digest. Sleeping for long periods is a strategy for conserving energy. Koalas and gliders are the only mammals which can tolerate the toxins in gumleaves but fortunately they don't make them 'high' or ‘drugged out’.

some stuff about other animals that like to get high/trip

Lazy buggers thats for sure have seen many while bush walking they are either sitting in the tree sleeping or eating, i think they only move to mate or to get away from bush fires!

LMAO....yeah right not high, hehe, seems my cats are not the only ones that like to eat intoxicating plants. cool, love learning new ways folks get high, even if they are koala bear folks, haha.

I saw this post while browsing this great forum and I thought I should join up and respond as I have worked with Koalas for a number of years now.
Koalas are not high nor stoned on Eucalyptus leaves. Koalas sleep at least 18 hours due to the fact that their only diet is Eucalyptus and it doesn't provide enough energy for them to be active for long periods of time. Koalas have very little body fat so they conserve the energy by sleeping. You can read more information at - https://www.savethekoala.com/about-koalas/frequently-asked-questions
