Recommended. Lake Tahoe area, if SF is gonna be your base. Maybe Yosemite.
Santa Cruz is beautiful but crowded, and difficult to navigate for the first time visitor.
Monterrey very costly, and not a whole lot to do, really. Aquarium is cool.
I'd deffo stay in SF, get a bit wild for a few days.. One GREAT City.. Enjoy it fully..!! Go Clubbing at DNA Lounge. Eat ethnic at all the various restaurants.. Indian Buffet meal, Thai, Chinese Dim Sum at New Asia in Chinatown (Stockton @ Pacific - not to be missed - 11am to 2pm only).. No need to drive around, just use feet, busses, cabs and trains.. Everyone just Hangs Out in SF.. Best place in the USA for doing that..
Union Street in SF is not the only choice for neighborhoods. I would choose a different area to stay. Expensive, crowded, no parking, a bit out of the way, and a bit pretentious too. The Real SF is more like "South of Market Street" (SOMA) for staying (prices are lower too) which puts one near all of the public transpo. Some places offer free parking, there. A big plus.
Another option, is to experience Haight Street, which is worthwhile, Big Time, as Mrs Babba indicated... The Red Victorian is a really cool BnB to stay at. It's not for everyone, is a bit European, bathrooms on the hallway. Each room is different and wild..! I always try to get a room that has a window on Haight. I can carefully take some surreptitious pipe hits with the window open, sitting on the pane.. Bring Earplugs. Get ready for the show..! Weekend nights are silly..!
Really fun Bars, restaurants, head shops, Amoeba Records (Go there if you like Music), all you want as an alternative thinker..!
Then drive up North to get an extreme Nature Hit - I am partial, but Mendocino's Coast is a wonderful destination with tons of Natural things to do. Beautiful beaches, and a coastline Beyond compare. Kayaking, whale watching, hiking, BEING...
Also, the Sonoma Coast is more than amazing. Rec'd route: Take Hwy 116 to the Coastal Highway out of Santa Rosa, and then all the way up to Mendo. about 2-3 hours on the Coast Hwy. Take your time, and use the "Turnouts," to let locals get by. You will get massive appreciation from other divers, and Good Karma goes a long way up North.. They know the road much better than you do.
Not much nightlife in the Country, if that is your need. But, Absolutely Awe inspiring drives all of them. Return via Hwy 128 through the Mendo Wine Country. And the HUGE Redwood Trees..
There is some decent weed if you get lucky in either county, haha..
You will return home, renewed.
Bon Voyage, regardless, Compatriot..!
Gonna go step out and catch the sunset before it is gone..! Green Flash Night..??
