I am wondering if I can buy a 35 watt -- 150 watt HPS bulb from home depot and use a ceramic socket then wire it to an extension cord.

No , you need a ballast

as chefro420 said you need a ballast

if you are thinking of 150w check this thread out. it shows you how to convert a security light from lowes/depot to a remote ballast grow light.
