If a opened pack of serious seeds ak-47 or ak47 is stored in a dark/dry place, that gets no light at all, will that last at least 10+ years?
or how long will they last?
As for the frige method, I dont put seeds in the frige.
a dark dry place,,, what kinda temp changes will they experience? what about humidity? air tight? there are a lot of things that can effect seeds viability. The very best way to save them for that long would to freeze them, airtight insulated containers with silica gel. I have had seeds that are 12 yrs old in the freezer with a 75% germ rate. I use a coffee thermos.
Why are you againts freezing or refrigeration as those are the only and best way to perserve seeds for extened periods of time?
i just recently pulled a pack of seeds that was 6yrs old out of the refrigerator...had 10 for 10 germination...i put mine in airtight rubbermaid products with a small sililica packet or two and keep the fridge at a temp slightly above freezing...about 35F...i spoke to Shantibaba and he recommended the refrigerator over the freezer but both are very great storage methods
My experience is that the relationship between the fertility or viability of seeds and their age is somewhat a strain related issue, somewhat the way in which they were grown, and somewhat the storage method used to preserve what's left...
Some strains are reputedly infertile by nature, some seed is damaged by high humidity during maturation, life of seeds grown on organics outlasts seeds grown on hydro nutes, storage with CO2 assists preservation etc, etc, etc...
Without mentioning my method, it's nothing too elaborate but I only use that one method for all my seed preservation needs, however, various beans typically last for varying amounts of time. Some beans are infertile from the start, others will only last two or three years while others will last me close to the decade. However, once you've gone beyond a certain threshold, the greater will be the decline in germ rates.
i keep my seeds in a stainless steel food jar made by nissan , with a packet of Desiccant
in there .All my seeds In my current grow were purchased 4 years ago and still germed fine . its air water and light tight also wont break .Id say they last a loooong time if stored properly .
